Live-Action AKIRA Remake Is Dead? TETSUUUUOOO!

headline.jpgAccording to Bloody-Disgusting, the long-in-development live-action remake of the popular 1988 anime “Akira” has exploded all over Neo-Tokyo.  BD says Ruairi Robinson has not only left the project but it is, according to their source, “dead as a doornail”.

For those unfamiliar with “Akira”, it originated in 1988 as a manga and then as an animated film co-written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo. The story was set in a neon-lit futuristic post-nuclear war “New Tokyo” in 2019 where a teen biker gang member is subjected to a government experiment which unleashes his latent powers. The gang’s leader must find a way to stop the ensuing swathe of destruction.  I’ve personally only seen bits and pieces of the film and what I’ve seen has never done much for me.  One of these days, I’ll sit down and watch the whole film but today I’m not feeling the loss.

How about you?  Are you bummed that there won’t be a live-action adaptation or do you think filmgoers dodged a bullet?  Should it ever be adapted into a live-action movie?  Leave your thoughts in the comments section below.

I for one am happy. Whatever momentum they drew up to re-make an already nearly perfect film should just be used to re-release it in theatres, the way they have on an average of every 10 years or so.

This film displays the highest standard of hand drawn cel animation, and rivals anything Pixar, Disney, or anybody, really, has done before or since.

    Plus - it's really. F*cking. Cool.
