Confirmed! WATCHMEN Director’s Cut to Show In Select Theaters For One Weekend in July

Just an hour ago I attended an amazing Blu-ray presentation at Warner Bros. in Burbank to help promote “Watchmen: The Director’s Cut” and “300″ on Blu-ray. Based on the footage I saw and how interactive the discs are, these are seriously must own Blu-ray’s. The “Watchmen” Blu-ray has over three hours of extras and the “300″ Blu-ray over two hours. I was really blown away.
But the highlight of the day was director Zack Snyder confirming the news that the “Watchmen Director’s Cut” would be playing in select movie theaters next month! If you remember, he talked about a possibly release when the film first came out.
Zack said the movie would show in theaters “the weekend before Comic-Con in Los Angeles, Dallas, Minneapolis, and New York.” He said the release would only be for one weekend and in one theater. He also said they made a new “Watchmen” movie poster to help promote the release.
Take a look at what he said after the jump. If you live in one of these cities, this is awesome news.
I’ll have a lot more of what Zack told me later today or tomorrow. Including his Comic-Con plans - which are awesome.

OMG wow! wow! wow! Any more information on the theaters and how to get tickets?
Awesome McAwesome!
You mean it might have a chance to not actually suck.
THE MOVIE NEVER DID SUCK!! IT WAS GREAT! IT WAS F-ing GREAT! I DIDN”T WANT IT TO END.
trey that was the gayest thing ive ever heard.
As an Alan Moore fan who read Watchmen in the early 90’s and again before the movie was released, I don’t see the big upset about the movie.
Sure, they omitted some stuff for the sake of running time (it was long enough), but it flowed together real nice. I liked the original intro, the soundtrack and the new ending and those were all hated by “fanboys”. Take it from a REAL fan of Watchmen: the new ending is more plausable and I think they did the best anyone could do. I liked Ozy’s new costume, Doc. Manhattan’s voice and I even liked Snyder’s wide camera shots to get everything on screen. These were all criticized by critics. WTF?
The “fanboys” are not truly fanboys, just bitches. They’re there to bitch about everything that’s different instead of wondering why It’s different. The critics still had The Dark Knight stuck up their ass and I’m sick of it all. Watchmen was awesome and the Director’s Cut will be even better!
My 5 Favorite Comic Book/Graphic Novel Films:
5. Iron Man
4. Sin City
3. The Crow (1994)
2. The Dark Knight
1. Watchmen
Agreed. Thank you for pointing out that, in terms of the basic storyline, the ending developed for the film actually ties in more succesfully than the ending to the GN. Personally, the squid was a lowlight of the book for me and this time around, Dr.Manhattan’s final departure doesn’t feel as random.
I like that your list of faves is a well thought out, carefully considered series of choices.
Here’s mine:
5) The Shadow- this is an overlooked , underappreciated gem that really captured the feel of the noir character . Terrific central performance by Alec Baldwin. The sequence early in the film where he saves the scientist on the bridge is outstanding.
4)The Dark Knight- a flawed classic. I don’t think it’s the best ever made. I thought Bale gave the exact same performance as he did in Batman Begins , showing no real character development since the first film and I honestly felt that more should have been done to explore the depths to which Dent had been psychologically scarred following his transformation. But there’s no denying that Ledger’s Joker is how the character was meant to be seen on screen and the film- like Watchmen- actually contains deeper meaning than the superficial high concept belies at a glance. I also want to note that Gary Oldman doesn’t receive nearly the amount of kudos he deserved for his role as Gordon in TDK. Now THAT character showed development from the first film. When he tells his son “Actually, this time I saved him” it was one of the best moments in the film for me.
3) Iron Man- What can be said that hasn’t been said already? An instant classic.
2) Superman the Movie: Awe inspiring and just too much fun with effects as eye popping today as they were back in 1978 . Possibly the best casting ever for a comic icon in the form of the late, great Christopher Reeve.
1) Spiderman 2 - this may be the fan boy in me talking, but Spidey’s always been my favorite comic character and Doc Ock my favorite Spiderman villian. This movie deftly captured both of them in a pitch perfect screen translation, instilling them with an inherent humanity which made it so much more potent . The F/X were extraordinary as well: That battle on the speeding train is still one of the best cinematic fights ever put to film.
So why no “Watchmen”? Simple. I can’t include “Watchmen” because it’s actually in my top all-time favorite films , regardless of genre.
I had a quiet initial reaction to the film. I said nothing as we exited the theater on that opening night and my companions were of the opinion that it had not worked it’s intended magic on me. I had to explain that my silence was borne of awe, not disappointment. The film (as did the GN) presents some very profound questions about the nature of why we do what we do and what, in the end, is worth saving. This movie followed me out of the theater and stayed with me for days. Yes, there are flaws- I believe no film is perfect- but the strengths far outweigh the weaknesses. A saga with costumed adventurers and one “superman” for the thinking man. I may take some heat for this, but I WOULD place “Watchmen” on a level with other contemplative epics such as “Blade Runner” or “The Deer Hunter” in that the film has such an epic scope and is actually ABOUT something. Something which runs a far cry deeper than mere superheroics. All that and Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach, too.
Apologies for being so long winded!
I think you liked the movie because it, like you, is long-winded.
WOOHOO! WATCHING 2 HOURS OF A BLUE PENIS WAS WAY TO SHORT!!!
You know, its funny, after the initial shock of actually seeing a penis on the screen with out the censors sticking an X rating on it for just that, I mellowed out and it was just a part of that character.
Did I like seeing the monster manliness of the good Doctor everytime he was on the screen? No, it actually made me a little uncomfortable, but I think that was the point, things that make us uncomfortable just didn’t phase him any more.
I mean seriously, if you were a God would you worry if people saw your junk?
I agree with Chase… I read the novel and honestly at the end my only response was “really… THATS it?” I thought the ending in the book was entirely ridiculous and not plausible. The movie did a good job of cleaning it up and making it less ridiculous. I cant wait for the directors cut.
I will admit though… I didnt entirely enjoy the soundtrack, but the score was great
Awesome, so viewers will be treated to still MORE action figure posturing in slo-mo! I can’t wait.
Yeah, sorry but 90 minutes of blue cock is more than I can handle in one session thanks.
Everyone keeps banging on about the wang, it was only a small part of the film!
I’ll get my coat.
I think it’s a great film, and don’t see why people keep driving the penis thing home. It was on screen for at most one minute, and it’s not even REAL! Who cares? Grow up.
I’m a female and honestly I got a bit sick of seeing his junk. However,it didn’t distract me from the rest of the movie. It was awesome,I can’t wait to own it on Blu-Ray,and I WILL be going to see it next month with my son.
It was too long as it was. (The movie, not Dr. Manhattan’s junk)
I wish it were coming to Atlanta.
