I am probably going to end up liking this new poster for “A Christmas Carol” more than I like the movie.  What a great image of a weird candle-person’s flame providing a flicker of a character’s face.  That appears to have more depth and resonance than a needless, 3D motion-capture movie with Jim Carrey as Ebenezer Scrooge in the five-billionth adaptation of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol”.  I guarantee you that other than his visual wizardry, Zemeckis has nothing new to offer this story and while it will be visually impressive, it will ultimately leave you wondering “What’s the point?”

Hit the jump to check out the new poster from dvd-forum.at.  “A Christmas Carol” hits theatres on November 6th.

Will Robert Zemeckis ever go back to making great movies? Like, with real actors?

“What’s the point?” ??? How about a great comedic actor providing us with his own unique interpretation of a classic character. Or would you prefer that once Alister Sim had done the role that no ever again attempt it? How about Hamlet? Or just about any other classic character that’s been done nearly perfectly. The point is that if the job is done well then each generation will discover and embrace these performances as their own. But clearly you would prefer we stop artistic interpretation as soon as it has your stamp of approval. Some people should NOT be allowed to write columns.

I actually love Zemeckis’ performance capture movies, in part because each one is getting better and better. Polar Express and Monster House had obvious flaws, but Beowulf was a great improvement. From what I’ve seen of this new Jim Carrey film, it looks like performance capture has finally reached the level of realism and scope that Zemeckis originally intended. I hope this poster is an indicator of the imagination level of the film. This poster is beautiful.
