Willem Dafoe can happen at any time.  He’s an actor that just appears in random roles.  It’s not fair to say he’s a standard character actor because he can and does lead films from time to time.  He’s one of the leads in Lars Von Trier’s upcoming and reportedly batshit-insane “Antichrist” and he’s been the main villain in a major blockbuster like “Spider-Man”.  And then out of nowhere, he can be the fourth-supporting role in a movie like “Inside Man” or “The Aviator”.

Now Variety is reporting that Dafoe just happened to Andrew Stanton’s (”WALL-E”) upcoming adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ “John Carter of Mars”.  Hit the jump to find out how Dafoe will happen this time.

According to Variety, Dafoe will play Tars Tarkas, a fierce green Martian warrior, who’s unusual among his savage race for his ability to love.  You had me at “Dafoe playing a green Martian warrior” but the ability to love?  Even better.  Apparently, Tars’ forges an alliance with John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) and the two fight side-by-side in all of the book so if there’s sequels, Dafoe could happen to those too.

I guess he enjoyed working with Stanton on "Finding Nemo".

Since I was a teenager I've been a big fan of the Barsoom series by Burroughs. When I learned that Disney had acquired the rights, I was horrified. Tarzan was also written by Burroughs and Disney turned it into a kiddie cartoon. Please, oh, PLEASE make the Barsoom series into the hard-core, hard-hitting series it was written to be!

Dafoe as Tars Tarkas? Setting my preconceptions aside and hoping for the best...
