James McTeigue (:’V for Vendetta’ and the upcoming “Ninja Assassin”) has been recently rumored to be one of the names that might reboot the Man of Steel.  McTeigue recently revealed some more info about what he has planned for his “Superman” film if he were to be given the chance.  McTeigue says “”I think if I was ever going to go near Superman, I would do a complete reboot-take it in a direction that you would absolutely not expect, actually,” Sounds great to me. To read what else McTeigue has to say about the Superman reboot hit the jump.

superman_returns_image__3___small_.jpgSo, does this mean that McTeigue will be directing the next “Superman” film?  No, not at all.  This is only what he would do if given a chance, or as McTeigue says “”  So, that would be my thinking on it, if I was ever going to go near Superman.”.  I don’t know what my feelings are towards a McTeigue directed “Superman” reboot are.  I will say that I was on the fence before but he does win me over more when he talks about what his thoughts are towards the film in his interview with MTV: “I think it’s good that they just had a court case where, basically, if you make another Superman movie, you can’t touch Superman growing up-that’s part of the story that you can’t touch any more,” he said. “That wouldn’t be a bad thing. I think everybody’s a bit sick of seeing the origin story.”

I couldn’t agree more, James.  Another retelling of Superman’s origin sounds like the worst possible way to go.  Having said that, I’m curious about what this unexpected direction that McTeigue talks about could be.  I really, really hope this does not mean a dark and gritty film.  If there is one superhero which I think doesn’t deserve this makeover, it’s good ol’ Supes. However, could this unexpected other direction mean a “Superman” film set in the early 60’s with a more classic look and approach to it?  Probably and most definitely not, but when I watch “Mad Men” I can’t help but think of how cool of a film it would be if someone where to go in that direction.  Hell, I even think that Jon Hamm would be the perfect man to wear the iconic blue tights.  Anyways, enough dreaming, lets go back to the facts.

James McTeigue is not confirmed to tell Superman’s story but he is confirmed to be retelling another classic story.  Earlier this month we told you guys about McTeigue directing an adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” next and as far we know that project is still next for the director. McTeigue’s described his version of the classic Poe story by saying “”It’s like the poem, The Raven, itself, crossed with ‘Se7en’.”  This one sounds interesting to say the least.

McTeigue’s latest film, “Ninja Assassin”, opens on November 25th..

How about a non-metrosexual, pro American, traditional Superman without a son. That would be a refreshing "new direction" after that last weak ass movie.

The best possible Superman movie would be an adaptation of a Tom De Haven book from a while back called It's Superman! that reads a lot like a 1920's social problem novel. And it should be directed by The Coen Brothers.

James McTeigue seems like an especially uninspired director, just based on V FOR VENDETTA and the trailer for NINJA ASSASSIN. I can't imagine his "unexpected" take on Superman would amount to more than making Superman more "awesome," which is not what the character needs, artistically. He needs to be inspiring.

I know this is blasphemy to a lotta folks, but Bryan Singer was on the right path with SUPERMAN RETURNS. For years, people complained that summer action movies were too much bang and not enough character, and then Singer made a really admirable attempt to do a character-based superhero film, about the inherent tragedy and difficulty in trying to do the right thing, no matter what. And he got trashed for it.

It also didn't help that it's is the only superhero film (aside from maybe BATMAN RETURNS) that I'd feel comfortable calling a piece of art, and that will never gain you an audience (see also: SPEED RACER, Ang Lee's HULK). It really is a stunning film, and the reputation it's held over the last few years is kind of disheartening, while fundamentally vapid films like STAR TREK get praised.

His real problem was an inexplicable allegiance to a film that, aside from Christopher Reeve's performance, isn't all that good. That and Kate Bosworth.

i've got an idea. how about picking up some superman comics from the last 15 years and following any of the awesome story lines that you can find within. fuck art, fuck classic, just give us a fucking superman movie. christ. making clark a stalker dead beat dad was not fucking "trying to do the right thing". it was selfish, arrogant, and ignorant, scott.

I hate all of Bryan Singer's films. He trys to make "art" fims and fails miserably.
