John Malkovich, Dylan Walsh and Scott Glenn have joined Diane Lane in the Disney production of “Secretariat”, the movie based on the horse with the most prized semen in history.  Details after the jump.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, John Malkovich has joined “Secretariat”, the horse-centric biopic that Randall Wallace (”The Man in the Iron Mask”, “We Were Soldiers”) is directing for Disney.  Malkovich will play Lucien Laurin, the real-life jockey who became the trainer of the legendary Triple Crown-winning horse known as Secretariat.

As announced back in June, Diane Lane will star in “Secretariat” as Penny Chenery, the housewife who inherited Secretariat and went on to earn the title “the first lady of racing.”  Dylan Walsh (Dr. McNamara on “Nip/Tuck”) will play Lane’s husband in the film while the great Scott Glen will play a southern aristocrat who loses the horse in a coin toss.  I bet he takes the whole thing really well, though.

Secretariat had a long and fulfilling life as a stud horse after retiring from the track but, given that the “Secretariat” script was written by Mike (”Radio”) White, I’m thinking that the movie is gonna skip that part and concentrate on the inspiring, heart-tugging triumph of the story.  Queue the schmaltzy music and the saccharine synopsis:

“Secretariat is based on the life of the 1973 Triple Crown-winning racehorse and its owner, Penny Chenery.  Chenery was a mother and housewife who knew little about horses when she was pressed to take over her ailing father’s horse farm in Virginia. Though Secretariat came along and began to take shape as a potential champion, Chenery was pressured to sell the farm after her father died and she was hit with a multimillion-dollar inheritance tax. She saved both the farm and the horse, and watched as Secretariat became the first thoroughbred to win the Triple Crown in 25 years, taking the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes in dominating fashion.”

Let's scare kids by making them listen to Malkovich talk throughout a family film. Good idea

What a win in 1973 with Turotte aboard. Let's cultivate the pulic's interest in Thoroughbred horse racing!! Movies are a terrific vehicle.

See you all at Cal Bred and National Breeders' Cup in October and November, respectively, at Santa Anita Racetrack, Arcadia, California.

    God bless.
