If You Think THE HOBBIT and JAMES BOND Are in “Peril”, You’re an Idiot

I woke up this morning and it turned out the sky was falling.  According to Nikki Finke, MGM is on the verge of bankruptcy and if the creditors don’t cough up come cash, then the 85-year-old studio would have to sell off projects like the James Bond franchise and “The Hobbit” just to begin paying off their debts bondholders and then creditors and the bank may only get a 7.5% return on their investment and then have to make a low-finance APR of $2,600 and all cars must go!  Understanding finance is scary but if there are a bunch of parties and numbers then something bad is happening!

So a bunch of movie sites seem to think that Bilbo Baggins and 007 are in the ICU and if MGM dies who knows when we’ll see these movies, IF EVER!  If you honestly believe that no one’s going to make these movies in the near future; that some producer or some studio is just going to sit on the rights to James Bond, shrug, and say, “Well, let’s just stick it in development hell,” or look at “The Hobbit” and think, “Yeah, those ‘Lord of the Rings’ movies were kind of successful but I think that was just a fluke; best not to chance it,” then you are an idiot.  You don’t have to be a lawyer or a financial wizard to figure this out.  I don’t know if MGM will survive or not, but as far as these properties are concerned, you should put down your inhaler and move on with your day.

MGM may be in trouble but Sony isn’t and James Bond is very important to Sony. Warner Bros. would be all over The Hobbit. LOTR was New Line who is Warner Bros.

Unless, of course, said rights were bought by, say the Weinstein company…

You’ve got a keenly analytical mind. I like how you provide no reasons or evidence for your beliefs.

Obviously Bond movies aren’t going to go away and The Hobbit will likely get made regardless of this situation. But the fact of the matter is they’re set up at MGM right now. People aren’t worried these properties will disappear, they’re worried already distant release dates just got pushed back indefinitely. And it’s quite possible that if The Hobbit doesn’t hit theaters until 2014, or whenever, then it’s going to be a lot more difficult for it to draft off the success of Lord of the Rings.

Yeah, and if you’re worried about an indefinite pushback, you’re an idiot. Also, I like how you accuse me of providing no reasons or evidence (because I only have my years of experience to go by instead of sitting in on these meetings like I wanted to), and then provide none of your own.

But yeah, if they don’t make The Hobbit RIGHT NOW then everyone will just forget about it. The $1Billion+ the Lord of the Rings trilogy made at the box office and its 13 Oscars for The Return of the King alone just make is a project where if it hits in 2014, then no one will see it.

I’m pretty sure everyone has a “keenly analytical mind”, compared to yours. But if you want to keep freaking out about this, don’t let me stop you.

it should be fairly obvious to any “non-idiots” that the problem with the hobbit even just being delayed is that ian mckellen would be to old to travel to NZ and reprise his LOTR role.

You think that Ian McKellan being “too old to travel” is what would stop this film from getting made? I love McKellan but even if he died they would make this film and they’d still make the release date. They’d just be “Doing it for Ian,”.

Bilbo Baggins as 007. Financial problem solved.
