CBS Commits to Pilot for New HAWAII Five-0. Will be Written by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci

In August of last year, Nicole ran a story about “Criminal Minds” executive producer/showrunner Ed Bernero trying to develop a new version of “Hawaii Five-0″ for CBS. Since then, it’s been very quiet, leading most to assume the project was dead.

Not so fast, as THR is reporting that CBS has given a pilot commitment to the new show, except it’s now going to be written by feature scribes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (”Star Trek”, “Transformers”) and “CSI: NY” executive producer Peter Lenkov. More after the jump.

As Nicole said in her article, “Hawaii Five-O” ran from 1968 to 1980 on CBS. It starred Jack Lord as Detective Steve McGarrett, who looked about as Hawaiian then as Dog the Bounty Hunter does today. The series had a significant cultural impact - mainly thanks to its kick-ass theme music and its familiar catchphrase “Book ‘em Danno.”

According to THR story, not much is known about the new version. But, Kurtzman and Orci have been involved in TV as they helped create “Fringe” and also worked on “Alias”. Two shows I love. While I don’t know how much sci-fi or mythology can be added to a cop show on Hawaii, I saw the episode of “The Brady Bunch” where Greg finds an ancient tabu and a lot of bad stuff happens. Who knows how many other tabu’s are on the island, or if my lame attempt at humor is working.

Look, as a fan of Kurtzman and Orci, I’ll always give whatever they’re involved with a chance. Let’s hope for the best.
