THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON Breaks All-Time Midnight Record with $26.3 million

If you are a fan of The Twilight Saga, I don’t have to tell you what a big day this is. It’s probably been circled by a red heart on your day planners since, um, last November. For box office reporters, however, this is a big day for another reason. The release of New Moon at 12:01 am this morning had the potential to overturn the midnight box office record set by The Dark Knight back in July of 2008.  New Moon already had the record for midnight presales so the only question left to ponder was how high Bella and Edward would go. No official numbers from Summit are yet available but it looks like that $18.4 million record The Dark Knight claimed has indeed fallen.

According to Variety, estimates for the 3,514 North American New Moon theatres put the film’s midnight total at $26.3 million.  This means that The Dark Knight opening day record of $67.1 million is in danger of succumbing to Twilight mania. We all knew it would be huge, but huge enough to beat The Dark Knight? That’s a horse of another color. A huge horse.  We’ll keep you updated as the weekend numbers start to come in.

I hope they wash all the seats off at my theater.
Don't want to get fresh cream all over me when I see Ninja's tearin it up.
I hope this piece of shit doesn't overtake TDK for #1 opening B.O.

This movie broke midnight earnings but it won't break Dark Knight 158 million of the first weekend collection at all and by the way this movie hasn't got that great reviews and it's got 30% at rotten tomatoes .I wouldn't say this movie sucks but it is some where between average for me.

Not to be a nit-pick, but the midnight record that The Dark Knight had, was beaten by Half Blood Prince back in July. New Moon still has the record, to be sure, but it beat Harry Potter, not The Dark Knight.
  • The film is going to make money whether people want it to or not it's just that simple. Look I'm a guy but I'm also a student filmmaker, I've read the books as research and found them to be pretty good and the first movie was so-so. No one says you have to like this movie, everyone is free to have his or her own opinion about the movie, I'm going to see the movie tonight and review it because that's what I do, I try to study all movies good or bad to see what worked and what didn't, what attracts that audience and what doesn't. The funny thing to me is that all I've been hearing is negative stuff from people who haven't even seen the film and then the movie breaks the midnight record lol. I know for a fact that the movie won't become like the number one movie of all-time or beat out of The Dark Knight or the Harry Potter series but it will succeed for the first few weeks nonetheless. You can complain about it all you want but in the end you it won't matter. The next film will be the same way and we'll be having this same argument come June 30, 2010.
