I don’t want to ward you off seeing footage from Avatar but I’m not exactly sure why Fox decided to put this new clip of a Thandor chasing down Jake Sully’s avatar (Sam Worthington) online when it’s clearly a big set piece that deserves to be seen in theaters and IMAX where you can really appreciate the craft and the dynamic sound design.  And I’m speaking from experience because this is one of the scenes I saw at Comic-Con.  It’s amazing and while this clip should give you a taste, you may want to hold off and let your first experience of it be when you see the full movie.  If you do choose to watch the clip, it should definitely give you an idea of how fun this movie can be when projected in 3D.

If you decide you want to see the clip, you can check it out after the jump along with a synopsis.  Avatar hits theaters on December 18th.

Head over to IGN if you want to download the clip or want to see trailers and features from the film.

For those just tuning in, here’s a synopsis:

AVATAR takes us to a spectacular world beyond imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on an epic adventure, ultimately fighting to save the alien world he has learned to call home. James Cameron, the Oscar-winning director of “Titanic,” first conceived the film 15 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not exist yet. Now, after four years of production, AVATAR, a live action film with a new generation of special effects, delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story.

We enter the alien world through the eyes of Jake Sully, a former Marine confined to a wheelchair. But despite his broken body, Jake is still a warrior at heart. He is recruited to travel light years to the human outpost on Pandora, where corporations are mining a rare mineral that is the key to solving Earth’s energy crisis. Because the atmosphere of Pandora is toxic, they have created the Avatar Program, in which human “drivers” have their consciousness linked to an avatar, a remotely-controlled biological body that can survive in the lethal air. These avatars are genetically engineered hybrids of human DNA mixed with DNA from the natives of Pandora… the Na’vi.

Reborn in his avatar form, Jake can walk again. He is given a mission to infiltrate the Na’vi, who have become a major obstacle to mining the precious ore. But a beautiful Na’vi female, Neytiri, saves Jake’s life, and this changes everything. Jake is taken in by her clan, and learns to become one of them, which involves many tests and adventures. As Jake’s relationship with his reluctant teacher Neytiri deepens, he learns to respect the Na’vi way and finally takes his place among them. Soon he will face the ultimate test as he leads them in an epic battle that will decide nothing less than the fate of an entire world.

Oh my this is just horrible.
1: Whats up with the Signourney Avatar face, it looks like something from a bad TV commercial.
2: None of the characters have any WEIGHT to them, its a common problem with Mocap and even hand keyed stuff but they really should have addressed this because it takes the believability (such as it is) right out of it.
3: I really didnt feel any tension from this chase scene, its been done before in countless movies and even Cameron is better than this, I know its out of context but it felt flat and like a game quality intro.

Im a fan of Cameron so I hope this gets ALOT better in 3D

Wow, Wanker, you are blind. Do you realize everything you just watched was completely fake and computer generated? That was amazing camera work, amazing visuals and beautifully directed. Some people can't appreciate the good and just focus and look for flaws. This was beautiful!

Wanker666....Wow, you really can judge a book by it's cover.

    Hey spankwank!! it's a 2 and a half second clip. get a grip.=P

This is the first trailer that looked better than a game cinematic. I still hate the tired, Fern Gully/Pocahontas/Smurf (pick one) plot, but that's some beautiful animation.

Uh yea I did realize its completely fake, unless there are genuine 8ft tall blue people on this planet..and THATS MY POINT. It still feels fake, I can get past the actual look of the characters, but they FEEL like some dude running around in a mocap suit. which is what it is. Go back and watch Jurassic Park or Kong to see a few chases almost exactly like this but at least they felt more intense and had weight to the animals/creatures..everything freekin floats here!

Im going to see this movie, probably more than once, but I think its an uphill battle to try and pass off something like this as 'real' when its so far from reality or anything we know. At least Gollum had a basis in reality that we could connect to, I really cant connect to these characters just yet..hopefully the performances will really shine thru
