With the summer of 2008 a bit of a disappointment for Disney (only Pixar's "WALL-E" saved it from being a total embarrassment), is it any wonder that the studio would want to revisit one of its most lucrative summer franchises in DVD form?
Or I guess I should say re-revisit, as Disney likes releasing "The Pirates of the Caribbean" trilogy on DVD as much as Jack Sparrow likes drinking rum - I can no longer even keep up with how many times these films have been immortalized in disc form but I do know one thing – September will mark the first time that all three features will be available in the Hi-Def Blu-ray format in one big, glorious box-set.
Here's the scoop from the official Disney press release:
Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment presents the Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy: 6-Disc Blu-ray Hi-Def Collection, available on September 16, 2008.

Filled with spectacular action, irreverent humor, seafaring myth and magic, all three blockbuster films from producer Jerry Bruckheimer will be available for the first time together in a Blu-ray collection. The six-disc set boasts a precious trove of bonus features including behind- the-scenes-documentaries, hilarious bloopers and a captivating Blu-ray exclusive: Enter the Maelstrom, which takes viewers deep into the franchise's epic conclusion, a perilous whirlpool of unimaginable scale. With feature film presentations created from the original digital source files, Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy: 6-Disc Blu-ray Hi-Def delivers the ultimate home viewing experience.
So what, besides a superior Blu-ray print, will this box-set bring to the canon of "Pirates" lore? Not much.
A quick check of my two-disk, standard-format edition of "Dead Man's Chest" reveals that the "precious trove" of bonus features is the exact same "trove" that was offered up in 2006. The one change appears to be a Blu-ray interactive game called "Liars Dice" – and we all know how fun those set-top games are….
The release of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" Blu-ray trilogy also coincides with something that Disney is calling "Talk-Like a Pirate Day," and if you know what that is, for God's Sake, keep it to yourself.
