The film starts out by explaining the world in which the story exists, where Vampires aren’t exactly the terrifying creatures that go bump in the night.  They are more along the lines of the next step in human evolution.  They live to be 200 and still look like they’re in there late 30’s. That is, until they suddenly age and die real quick, kind of like the guy in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade who drinks from the wrong cup.

Anyways, these vampires have existed among us and lived peacefully for centuries with an agreement with mankind that they will not hunt humans.  So it’s basically a vampire movie where they are the good guy instead of the bad for once, well almost all of them.

Enter Edgar the evil brother to Dougray Scott’s character Silus, who has started to the very thing they are banned from, hunting humans.  He is hell bent on destroying the weaker race and if word gets out about his attacks then the peace is broken and a war between humans and vampires could begin.  So Silus teams up with a human police officer, played by Saffron Burrows and they go after Edgar.  Now I know what you’re all thinking, haven’t I heard this a hundred times before?  Well, the answer is sort of, but that doesn’t mean the film isn’t still fun to watch.

It’s a little bit smarter than your average vampire fare and I would even compare to the likes of Underworld, just with a smaller budget and no Kate Beckinsale in leather (which I know already discouraged many people), but there is Saffron Burrows, although not in leather.  It’s definitely a partially new take on a somewhat exhausted genre.  There are some cool scenes and the acting is pretty decent, I don’t know what it is, but the Brits always make things seem cooler with substantially smaller budgets.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Just a couple featurettes that show the making of and concept development, nothing too flashy.  If you love the movie check it out, if you like the movie skip it.

FINAL THOUGHTS

It’s definitely got some brains behind it and even a little social commentary wrapped in this sharp-toothed package.  I would say definitely check it out if you’re into Vampire flicks, because it’s a hell of a lot better than The Forsaken, Dracula 2000, and Queen of the Damned (just to name a few Vampire movies so atrocious no one should ever watch them).  It fits nicely onto the shelf of vampire films without pushing the envelope too much or retelling the same myths till we get exhausted.  All and all a fun time on the small screen.
