Brendan Fraser has signed on for THE MUMMY 3 for Rob Cohen

Well it looks like Brendan Fraser is going to be a movie star once again. While some could argue he still is, I’m more along the lines of thinking his star was on the way down, and falling pretty fast. But now that he’s signed on for Mummy 3 and also has two pretty big movies arriving next summer (Journey 3D and Inkheart for New Line) I think it’s safe to say his star is getting brighter.

While I don’t know who wants another Mummy movie, when you’re as desperate as Universal for franchises and summer tentpoles I guess you go back to what’s worked in the past. While you wouldn’t think it, the first two Mummy films took in over $800 million worldwide so I guess there is a pretty big audience for the Saturday morning films.

According to Variety, Rob Cohen is directing the new film and it starts shooting late this summer. They also say that Rachel Weisz is out. Now before all you fanboys get in a tizzy take a deep breathe as I’m sure they’ll get some extremely hot girl to play the female lead. It also appears that Jet Li is the new villain and the film is going to be set in China.

While the greenlight is being held up until Universal gets the final draft of the script from Smallville creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, I would imagine it’s going to take a lot for them to not move forward as they’ve paid Brendan a huge amount of money to star in the film.

If you want to read more here is the original Variety article.
