When you think of David Mamet, you think of hard hitting dialogue and serious subject matter. I mean this is the guy who wrote “Glengarry Glen Ross”!
But while you wouldn’t think he would write and direct a film about a Jiu-jitsu instructor who saves a famous action star and then gets a job in the film industry… you’d be wrong. And even after you read the synopsis to find out what it’s about, you then realize who he’s cast in the roles and you’ll be even more shocked. How about Tim Allen as the famous action star, Chiwetel Ejiofor as the Jiu-jitsu instructor, and he’s even got Rodrigo Santoro, Emily Mortimer and a bunch of other solid actors to fill out the other roles.
And while the movie “Redbelt” doesn’t arrive until next year, I’ve gotten the first official image for you to see right now. It’s of Chiwetel Ejiofor and it looks like he’s doing something he’d rather not be doing…. here’s the synopsis for a bit more info…
Mike Terry (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is the chief instructor at the Southside Jiu-jitsu Academy. Although a talented fighter, he refuses to compete in professional bouts: “Competition weakens the fighter.” Instead he trains dedicated students in the art of self-defense: bodyguards, cops. soldiers. At his brother-in-law’s club one evening, Mike saves a famous action star (Tim Allen) from a severe beating. His defense of Frank leads to a job in the film industry, but other events conspire to force Mike to participate in a prize fight. An American samurai film set the world of mixed martial arts, David Mamet’s REDBELT is a story about the limits of a single man’s integrity.
