MILK This Trailer For All It's Worth

As the cast rolled out for Gus Van Sant's "Milk", a biopic about Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man elected to substantial political office, it seemed like Oscar bait. While I think Van Sant is mostly indifferent to the Academy Awards (as opposed to a director like Ron Howard), the cast seemed to be lining up for the opportunity to queer it up and all the superlatives of "Brave!" "Daring!" "Fearless!" and so forth, just taking the performance would entail.
But if this new trailer is any indication, Van Sant and his cast have made a real film that's going to force us to realize how little since Milk's assassination thirty years ago. Especially worthy of note is Sean Penn who isn't playing your standard, flaming, homosexual stereotype but a real person with real hopes and aspirations. My only worry is that it will be too much of a hagiography and make Milk the Patron Saint of Homosexuals, thus turning his life and his sacrifice into something superhuman that us mere mortals cannot hope to aspire to progress we've made.
For those just tuning in, here's a brief synopsis:
The story of California's first openly gay elected official, Harvey Milk (Sean Penn), a San Francisco supervisor who was assassinated along with Mayor George Moscone by recently resigned City Supervisor Dan White (Josh Brolin).
"Milk" hits theatres on November 26, 2008. Check out the trailer below, or here for HD:
