So what did you guys do last night? Let me guess – you went to the movies? Apparently neither the total collapse of the American economy nor the entertainment catnip that was the first presidential debate was enough to convince anyone to stay home this weekend. After all, who can concentrate on politics and junk when Shia LeBeouf is back in theatres and there is still one active credit card in the house?
Implausible plots proved no match for the lure of LeBeouf as "Eagle Eye" perched atop the box office with authority. The Paramount/Dreamworks release, which reunites Shia with his "Disturbia" director DJ Caruso, opened in 3,500 theatres and brought in an impressive total just shy of thirty million dollars. See? Who needs originality and innovation when you have Spielberg's name above the credits?
Coming in a not-so-close second with 13.5 million was "Nights In Rodanthe," the latest sphincter-clenching tear-jerker from "The Notebook" scribe Nicholas Sparks. I liked "The Notebook" well enough (I am a woman and therefore contractually obliged to make that admission), but the latest from Sparks, the new Queen – I mean, King, of chick-lit adaptations, has actually made me hate love … especially the all-important 'montage' stage of courtship.
If "Rodanthe" was sphincter-clenching, let's just say that Spike Lee's "Miracle at St. Anna's" was sphincter-loosening -- and even that doesn't really convey the total mess of this movie. Disney opened "Miracle" in close to 2,000 locations but still only managed to earn 3.5 million for the week. I actually spotted a few people leaving the screening I attended, though I give them credit for making it to the two hour mark at least. With its 45 million dollar budget it will be a miracle indeed if Spike's baby ends up anywhere near profitable.
I saw "Miracle at St Anna's" begrudgingly. I wanted to see Sam Rockwell in "Choke," but couldn't find a theatre near me that was showing it – curse my love for small town values! The latest from "Fight Club" author Chuck Palahniuk opened in only 435 locations and earned just over 1.3 million – about what "The Dark Knight" brought in from the 1,400 theatres that continue to light the Bat Signal, incidentally.
Finally, I have to admit that I had never heard of the film that is sitting up there at number four. "Fireproof," I believe it's called. Somehow this so-called "Fireproof" pic managed to make 6.5 million in only 835 locations. How did this happen? How did I completely miss this movie? Oohhh…. You say it's some sort of Jesus movie -- and NOT the kind that Bill Maher would make? That could explain it. I guess I'll never be a part of the target audience for a movie that stars Kirk Cameron... until he decides to make a Jesus versus vampire flick, that is. That would be awesome.
