There’s a famous scene in the film where Oscar Wilde with Stephen Fry and he said he didn’t really know until he was an adult.

Right.  And there are people who get married and have families and then suddenly they figure out that they’re gay so I feel it definitely is real.

You mentioned an R rated scene that they cut

No, I was just joking! (laughs)  It was always meant to be just a very sweet romantic comedy and to take a subject matter that was more controversial and modern put it in this format that was more old fashioned and very commercial and palatable to all audiences and then take this other thing and put it in there.

Had she written a really hot sex scene would you have done it?

I mean I don’t see anything… that’s not the tone of the movie.  The movie is just a light-hearted romantic comedy that deals with this deeper subject matter but the tone is light hearted and sweet and you could probably take your kids…

Do you look at movies now differently because you’ve started to move into the producing world?

I just think, oh a producer is such hard work and now if I get a job it’s so much easier than trying to get the money and now I have more respect for producers

What do you look for?

I just look for –it’s a gut reaction.  I think there’s not a lot of female perspective in cinema and I think it would be interesting just to see more of that.

What are you playing at the two films that were just at Sundance?

In Adrift in Manhattan I play a woman whose baby has died and it’s kind of three separate characters living in New York and how their lives become connected and they help each other through these weird darker moments.  And then Broken is about drug addicts.

So did you want to get serous after doing a comedy?

I kind of just read scripts and then if I like them I just do them.  I love comedies and I also love dramas so I just do what good material I can get excited about, I guess.

What’s a favorite romantic comedy?

I love the Apartment and I love Tootsie.  I love Katherine Hepburn Tracey Spencer movies – there are so many good ones.

Did you cram watching a bunch of those?

Yeah, I think Sue told me to watch a few different movies but I’ve already seen a lot of those films like Roman Holiday but the Katherine Hepburn Tracey Spencer movies I like their dynamic and how they would be really – give each other such a hard time.  I like that.

Would you move back to TV?

It’s not like the first thing I would think of but maybe if it was a really cool cable thing.

Have you ever talked about dong another Scrubs appearance?

Sometimes they do call me and stuff and I think that was really fun. I really enjoyed working with them.

Do you have any other TV appearances lined up?

No but I want to be on The Office (laughs)

Is that something you would call them for or you’re just putting it out there?

I’m just saying I like to watch that show.  I love how it’s real and weird and awkward.  Obviously I love the English version as well and I really love Sex and the City.

Have you ever worked in an office?

I worked in a doctor’s office when I was in high school and I filed things.  It was boring.

What was your first job in the film industry?

I did a hair commercial and I got my SAG card and I said, “Hair doesn’t feel like hair.”  That was my line.  I think I was 16.  And I played Kirk Cameron’s date on Growing Pains.  He had to go to the dance and he had these three girls he wanted to take.

How did you prepare for the dancing scene?

We had a choreographer and I think he does musicals or videos and he – it was a lot of rehearsals that we did for that.  We did hours and hours.  It wasn’t just like, oh show up and he teaches you a few steps. He drilled us in that scene and we’d be drenched in sweat.  We probably rehearsed that for twelve hours.

Did you like dancing with Tom or Bridget better?

Tom is more into dancing.  I think Bridget is – it’s fun to dance with Bridget because Bridget is so fun and so beautiful but Tom has been in musical theatre and he was helping me remember the steps and Bridget and me were kind of lost – and also the Bridget dance is much harder because we copied this move for move old dance in this movie and we had to mimic it and the tv was playing in the background and we’d be matching it so it was so much harder.

You’ve danced in other movies before – is swing dancing easier to pick up?

That was really hard too. I remember John took me to the Derby for a month and it was a lot of work but it was really fun and we tried to pick it up.  That kind of dance if you really try to do it well takes a lot of work.

If you weren’t acting what would you be doing?

I had a fantasy about being a doctor which I don’t know if I could have ever done but I really thought it would be fun to be a doctor and then I think I had another fantasy about being a psychologist (laughs).

Why acting?

It’s harder but it’s a great lifestyle sometimes because you don’t have to work all the time so it’s so nice not to have to go to work every day.

Besides The Office what else is on your tivo?

I’ve been watching Extras and I was watching the Ali G show but I guess he’s not doing that anymore.  And then I started watching 30 Rock and what else…. I don’t know….

You haven’t been pulled into any serial dramas like Lost or Heroes?

I watched an episode of Lost and I thought it seemed really good but it was really complicated to get into.

So you like Borat?

I did.  I thought it was funny and I can get a little bit pissed about how sexist or racist people were being but I think he’s really funny.

Would you ever consider Dancing With the Stars?

Someone else asked me that.  I’ve never seen that show.  I don’t know.  Dancing is really fun.  They compete, right?  I did watch Project Runway – that was on my Tivo for a while.  My friend Jamal got me into that and that was fun.

You shouldn’t do Dancing with the Stars

I’d like to avoid any reality television ever happening to me at any point.

What do you think of reality shows taking away from real actors?

I think some of it, it seems strange – why do we all want to watch people be so miserable?  Other people’s pain and misery – it seems kind of sad.  There’s this show called Cheaters and my friend is obsessed with it and they follow people around when they’re cheating.  I personally got caught up in Project Runway and I also got caught up in Queer Eye for the Straight Guy a lot.  I really liked it.  There was one where the guy was wearing a toupee and he took it off and they burned it on the barbecue and I was crying.  So, it can be fun.
