The other night I attended the premiere of “Bedtime Stories” and managed to get a number of interviews on the red carpet. While I’ve already posted my interview with Adam Sandler and Judd Apatow, I’ve got one left and it’s with screenwriter Matt Lopez.

While Matt’s resume as a screenwriter isn’t too long, with “Bedtime Stories” about to hit theaters and “Race to Witch Mountain” set for release next year, things are looking pretty good for the former lawyer. Add to that, he’s been signed to write “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” for director Jon Turteltaub and producer Jerry Bruckheimer and another script called “My Samurai”. Clearly Disney believes in Matt’s ability as a screenwriter.

Anyway, since not much info is known about “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”, I decided to use my time with Matt to find out whatever I could. It seems the current plan is to start filming in the spring and with the amount of A-list talent involved, I’d imagine this is going to be an event movie.

And while Matt didn’t give me a lot of new info on the plot, he did tell a great story about Nicolas Cage and his love of Fantasia. Also, it ends up his office at Disney was a big part of the original “Fantasia”. It’s a great story and worth hearing.

With a start date fast approaching, we’ll probably be hearing a lot more about the movie soon. Here’s what Matt had to say:

Matt Lopez

  • What was it like for him when he first heard Bedtime Stories was going into production
  • The Sorcerer’s Apprentice – say’s cast is coming together and it’s looking like a Spring ’09 start
  • How much did he look at Fantasia when writing Sorcerer’s Apprentice. He tells a good story about Nicolas Cage and his love of Fantasia and about his office at Disney
  • I ask if it’s Jon Turteltaub’s next project
  • Since Sorcerer’s  Apprentice is a Jerry Bruckheimer film and he’s known for making event films, how does that change the way he writes the script (if at all)
  • My Samurai talk
  • Can he write multiple scripts at the same time
  • Does he envision Sorcerer’s Apprentice as a summer event movie
