Broken Lizard’s Jay Chandrasekhar and Kevin Heffernan Exclusive Video Interview – THE SLAMMIN SALMON

As most of you know, the Broken Lizard guys have a new movie premièring at this year’s Slamdance Film Festival and it’s called “The Slammin’ Salmon”. Earlier this week we premiered the red band trailer and to say the response was huge…well, that would be an understatement. While I knew Broken Lizard had fans, the amount of bandwidth used in the first 24 hours was insane. Quite a response, meow.

So…when I was offered the chance to interview all the guys, after the success of the trailer, I jumped at the opportunity. Not only was I curious about how “Slammin’ Salmon” came together, but I was hoping to find out what was up with some of their rumored future projects like “Super Troopers 2”, “Potfest” and “Greek Road”.

Thankfully, the guys couldn’t have been nicer, and with the help of Collider’s own Andre Dellamorte, we spoke to all five guys earlier today.

However, while interviewing one person can sometimes be difficult, trying to speak with five people at the same time is next to impossible. So what we decided to do was break up the guys.

First, we spoke with Jay Chandrasekhar and Kevin Heffernan, as they’re the two directors. And after that interview was done, we spoke with Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske.

Since both sets of interviews are pretty extensive, I’m posting the Jay and Kevin interview tonight and I’ll have the other interview online Sunday. This way you can spread out your love for Broken Lizard over the weekend.

Finally, last night the guys held a friends and family screening for “Slammin’ Salmon” and I managed to interview the star of the movie Michael Clarke Duncan, as well as Sendhil Ramamurthy (“Heroes”) and Carla Gallo. So if you missed those interviews just click the links.

And with that, here’s the interview. As always, I’ve listed what we talked about above each part.

Jay Chandrasekhar & Kevin Heffernan - Part 1

  • I ask about the screening of Slammin Salmon last night
  • We talks about the test screening process
  • How is it to go back to their indie roots
  • Since they made the movie during the strike, was that an added bonus for them because they had more actors available to work
  • How did the strike affect the filming especially with the script
  • Where did the idea for Slammin’ Salmon come from
  • They tell a good story about Beerfest…

Jay Chandrasekhar & Kevin Heffernan - Part 2

  • Slamdance/Sundance talk
  • I ask when can people see Slammin’ Salmon – they think fall of 2009
  • How are they different as directors
  • Did Kevin always want to direct
  • I ask Jay about directing Chuck and Knight Rider for NBC
  • With the lawsuit Jay had to deal with on Dukes of Hazard, I ask his thoughts on Watchmen…
  • Super Troopers 2 talk – Jay says they’ve written 50 pages of the script and when it’s done they’ll figure out what it’ll cost to make and then they’ll talk to FOX
  • Potfest talk – Jay says they might make it and talks about all the celebs they might get to be in it
  • Greek Gods movie – it’ll be called Greek Road. Kevin talks about the movie and what it’s about. Jay says they almost made it budget problems happened so they made Beerfest
