If someone tells you they know what to expect from the "Spider-Man" musical and they're NOT involved with the production, then they are a fucking liar.  It's directed by Julie Taymor and the music is by Bono & The Edge.  It's about "Spider-Man".  And now even more baffling, the full title is "Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark".  What does darkness have to do with Spider-Man?  He's not Batman or Darkman (a character who could also use his own musical).  He's Spider-Man!  Yeah, he has his problems, but he swings around the city and cracks-wise with the super-villains.  What's with the emo title?

Here's what the press-release has to say about the story:

"The musical follows the story of teenager Peter Parker, whose unremarkable life is turned upside-down—literally—when he’s bitten by a genetically altered spider and wakes up the next morning clinging to his bedroom ceiling. This bullied science-geek—suddenly endowed with astonishing powers—soon learns, however, that with great power comes great responsibility as villains test not only his physical strength but also his strength of character. Spider-Man’s battles will hurtle the audience through an origin story both recognizable and unexpected—yielding new characters as well as familiar faces—until a final surprising confrontation casts a startling new light on this hero’s journey."

That's right: Spidey has to fight a giant spider in the third act.  Damn you, Jon Peters!  Whether he actually fights that giant spider or not, the official website says that previews of the show begin January 16, 2010 and that it officially opens on February 18, 2010.  Mark your calendars but don't just put "Turn Off the Dark" or folks will think that you're scheduling a time to kill yourself.

Click here to read Frosty's interview about the musical with its Mary Jane, Evan Rachel Wood.  You can check out the poster for the musical below.
