In 2006, Rachel Weisz won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of a social activist fighting against a corrupt pharmaceutical company in "The Constant Gardner". Weisz is returning again to a film of social justice by teaming with Larysa Kondracki for "The Whistleblower".
According to Variety, Weisz would play a female cop from Nebraska who serves as a peacekeeper in post-war Bosnia and exposes a United Nations cover-up of a sex trafficking scandal. Okay, that may be too much. Does she also cure cancer in the film? Is this film trying to hit all the "social importance" key words? I'm all for films being socially conscience but sometimes when you cover too much you end up not making a point at all and the film's patina of social awareness comes off as a trick to convey depth when really it's saying nothing at all. Then again, maybe the loglines in the trades just suck.
Weisz will soon be seen kicking ass in Rian Johnson's "The Brothers Bloom" (like, really soon; less-than-two-weeks soon), Peter Jackson's "The Lovely Bones", and Alejandro Amenabar's "Agora".
