DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK, Katie Holmes

I have no love for Katie Holmes and it has nothing to do with her personal life.  I'm glad that she at least started out as an actress rather than as a professional celebrity like Kim Kardashian or Tila Tequila or anyone else who has gone way past their fifteen minutes.  But Holmes has never wowed me as an actress.  I think we all breathed a collective sigh of relief when her role for "The Dark Knight" was recast with Maggie Gyllenhaal who is a real actress.

But you can't keep Katie Holmes down and maybe the great Guillermo Del Toro sees something in her that the rest of us don't.  Holmes will star in "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" which Del Toro co-wrote and co-produced and his protégé Troy Nixey is directing.  Nixey came to Del Toro's attention after Del Toro saw Nixey's short film, "Latchkey's Lament" and saw that Nixey had the right tone for "Don't Be Afraid".

As for the film itself, according to Variety, "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" is based on a 1973 ABC telepic about a young girl who moves in with her father and his girlfriend and discovers they are sharing the house with devilish creatures.  Fucking realtors.  They should tell you up front: this house may contain demons.  Instead, they just tell you the house is "cozy".

Holmes recently completed "The Extra Man" for "American Splendor" directors Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini.  Again, I hope that these folks see something in Holmes that I don't or at least that Holmes is being cast in roles she can handle.
