On rare instances I will break with tradition and report on the box-office tallies on a Saturday. Usually in the case of a big, highly anticipated release that carries with it big, highly anticipated expectations… I’d say “Star Trek” fits the bill.
Trek fans and film buffs alike have been speculating on how well JJ Abrams’ “Star Trek” would do pretty much from the day that Paramount announced that the “Lost” creator would be re-booting the franchise. I’m sure you heard caught some of the highlights:
1) But the director isn’t even a “Trek” fan!
2) The franchise was dead when “Enterprise” hit the air!
3) Who the hell is Chris Pine and why is he dissing William Shatner?
4) Young people don’t even care what a Spock is
5) It’s gonna totally crash and burn
And on and on like that – for the past nine months or so. Which is why I am happy to interrupt my Saturday to report on the actual fate of the new fangled “Star Trek”!
As you may have heard, Paramount sent the crew of the Starship Enterprise out into that final frontier on Friday – your local multiplex. Out of 3,894 theatres “Star Trek” pulled in $24 million in ticket sales – and to that you can tack on another $7 million from Thursday night and midnight showings.
It all adds up to a whopping $31 million estimated total, which is enough to put “Trek” second behind 2008’s “Iron Man” for all-time, live-action Paramount opening days.
And just to throw in some “Trek” history for you – the $31 million total is also the highest opening for any “Star Trek” flick. Second now goes to “First Contact” which bowed in 1996 with $30.7 million – blog about that Shatner! I know you want to…
