Could TRON 2 Actually Be Happening?

Earlier today I attended the press day for “The Amateurs” and got to participate in a roundtable interview with Jeff Bridges. While my primary reason for wanting to talk with Jeff was for some new “Iron Man” info, I also wanted to talk a bit on “Tron.”

The reason for that is due to the recent rumblings that a sequel to the cult classic might actually be in the works and since Jeff is obviously as close to the film as one can be…I figured it couldn’t hurt to ask him about it. And while I was going to ask him directly if he had heard anything, during his answer to my initial question he dropped that he heard a sequel might be happening.

According to Jeff, he’s being pitched an idea for the sequel pretty soon. He didn’t say what the idea was or who was involved…but he did say the reasons he might want to do it is the innovations to cinema. Here’s what he said, “But the reasons to do it and the reason I did that one (The original Tron) was because it was so innovative and I understand that they’ve got a whole new batch of stuff like that… innovations that they want to use on this so that could be kind of fun.”

As a huge fan of the first “Tron” I am beyond excited that a sequel might actually be in the works and that Jeff might be in it. Needless to say, I’m on this story like stink on shit.

So if you’d like to read what Jeff said it’s below. But if you’d like to listen to Jeff talk about a sequel to “Tron” here’s the MP3. His comments start around 7:45 and after his “Tron” comments he talks a lot about “Iron Man.” Look for a full transcript soon.

Question: You’ve taken a lot of photos on your movie sets. Did you take any on Tron and did you ever put on any from Tron?

Jeff Bridges: I started doing these books around Starman and that was the first. And Tron was after Starman… I’m trying to think… I didn’t do a book for Tron but a few years ago I did a compilation of the books that I did for the different films and I put a few from Tron in there. I hear they’re going to make a sequel too.

I was going to follow up about that. There’s always rumors about that.

Jeff Bridges: I know it. And I’m always curious as to what they’re going to say, I hear they’re going to pitch me one pretty soon so…

They showed it recently at the New Beverly Cinema recently and it holds up pretty well.

Jeff Bridges: Oh yeah? Gosh. We were all so excited when that came out. The technology and everything and about two seconds later every commercial on the TV you could see all that stuff for free.

So a sequel to that, is that something you’d need to come up reasons why not to do it? (has to do with how he always say he doesn't want to do a project)

Jeff Bridges: Why not to do it? The dancebell. Wearing a dancebell… I know you ladies wear thongs. A dancebell is our version of a thong and it’s a terrible thing. You can’t sit down. I got the tights on…there’s a lot of reasons not to do it. But the reasons to do it and the reason I did that one was because it was so innovative and I understand that they’ve got a whole new batch of stuff like that… innovations that they want to use on this so that could be kind of fun.
