Sirius/XM Merger Complete

It has been more than one year since the merger between satellite radio rivals Sirius and XM was announced, but today the deal was finally approved by the Justice Department. What took so long? Well as the New York based Sirius and the Washington based XM have been the only two providers of the ‘new’ satellite radio technology, regular old radio (the kind that is free) complained that a merger would constitute a monopoly and hurt consumers.

I don’t know… I feel hurt by the fact that no matter where I turn my car’s free radio antenna I still have to hear Carrie Underwood every hour, on the hour. At least with one big monolithic subscriber service I can assure myself that I get to hear whatever I want, whenever I want – it’ll just cost me.

How programming will shake out now that Sirius has swallowed XM is unclear. Will Howard Stern insist on firing Opie & Anthony, for instance? I can dream. Duplicate stations will of course be eliminated, but both network heads have assured their subscribers that the transition to one network will be smooth.

So, first my HD DVD’s lost out to Blu-Ray, now my giant XM boom-box (purchased for an unreasonable sum) has been rendered obsolete. Throw in that Sega Saturn from a few years back and I am beginning to feel like I have a technological handi-cap of some sort.

See your endless listening options narrow to one here.
