Producers aren't always as glamorous in the world of entertainment reporting as actors or directors, but they are often more instrumental in getting a project made than whichever 'names' happen to be attached. Take the Dreamworks based production team of Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. You have probably never heard of them, but at this moment, they are probably two of the most influential men in Hollywood.
They have incredible geek-cred through their association with JJ Abrams, graduating from "Alias" to produce both Abrams' new sci-fi pilot "Fringe" and his much-anticipated "Star Trek" feature. They had a big hit with some robot flick called "Transformers" last year and are currently working on its sequel. The pair is also developing the western sci-fi comic "Cowboys and Aliens" at Dreamworks and have just landed another graphic novel title for the Temple of Spielberg: "Atlantis Rising."
From Platinum Studios, the same publisher of "Cowboys and Aliens," "Atlantis" is a five part series about a deep-sea civilization that wages war on the land locked – and you never would have guessed that with such an enigmatic title, would you?
Kurtzman and Orci will team with "Atlantis" creator Mitchell Rosenberg to turn the books into a live-action feature film. Described as an "us vs. them" invasion story with a "techno-thriller" twist, "Atlantis Rising" will also address "the global debate on our impact to the environment," according to Rosenberg.
Oh God! You had me at "us versus them!" Do you think mentioning the environment is going to make me want to see your movie more? For once I would just like to see alien creatures get what's coming to them without feeling guilty about it. I don't want any of your activism to gum up my vapid escapism. After all, if I wanted a lecture on the environment I would watch "An Inconvenient Truth" again – please, please don't make me do it.
Melt the polar ice caps to help Atlantis rise here.
