Acclaimed director Steven Soderbergh is just the latest entertainment insider to go ga-ga over high end prostitution. Ever since Eliot Spitzer paid an escort $4,300 to service him in Washington DC, television networks and movie studios have been signing up 'escort' entertainment faster than a stripper can empty your wallet. I cite all of the prostitution "experts" showcased on talk TV recently, the dueling escort pilots from HBO and Showtime ("Diary of a Manhattan Call Girl" and "Secret Diary of a Call Girl") and now the latest indie feature from "Ocean's Eleven" director Steven Soderbergh called "The Girlfriend Experience."
The title refers to the practice of some escorts to give their clients the complete "girlfriend experience," meaning not just sex but pretending to be interested in their jobs and telling them that they don't look a day over 35 and all of that. Writers Brian Koppelman and David Levien interviewed several escorts before writing an outline for the film based on one woman who claims she makes one million a year as a paid girlfriend to the super-wealthy. Whether this is the same woman that 20/20 dug up for their two-hour special on prostitution I could not say, but really, how many of these million dollar ho's could there be?
"The Girlfriend Experience" will be Soderbergh's second film in his six picture deal with 2929 Entertainment after 2005's "Bubble." The pact called for the director to deliver low budget, quick-shoot films that are released simultaneously on DVD, VOD and in theatres. I myself couldn't decide on which to platform to screen "Bubble" – so I skipped it altogether.
Anyway, back to the hookers: Soderbergh plans on casting unknowns for "Experience," perhaps even an adult film 'actress' for the lead – OMG, porn stars! This is the moment you've all been waiting for - they'll take you seriously now! The shoot will most likely begin in the fall after Soderbergh completes his next film "The Informant" starring Matt Damon. The director also has his two part Che Guevara bio opening next month in Cannes. So when does a filmmaker find the time to interview high end prostitutes? Answer: He MAKES time.
Behold what Eliot Spitzer has wrought here.
