Guillermo de Toro may have already let it slip that he was set on re-casting Sir Ian Mckellen in the role of Gandalf for his "The Hobbit" films, but no one had heard from the man himself - Until this week when Empire Magazine got him to confirm his involvement. You know how those studios are, "the Hobbit" is supposed to be a sort of 'prequel' to "LOTR," what if New Line thought Mckellen had grown too old to play the friskier Grey Wizard? Not to worry though, here is what the actor had to say:
"Yes, it's true. I spoke to Guillermo in the very room that Peter Jackson offered me the part and he confirmed that I would be reprising the role. Obviously, it's not a part that you turn down, I loved playing Gandalf."
When asked about the script he told Empire that del Toro would begin work on it in about six weeks and indicated he had some vague notion of what the second film (due in 2011) would look like:
"Well I've read The Hobbit so I've got a good idea of what the story would be, but as to how it's going to work over two films and what going to happen on screen, well Guillermo has not got down to working out the major details yet I can tell you it's going to be amazing though."
I don't doubt that it will be amazing not at all but I have also read "the Hobbit," and there really isn't a lot on the page to guide you through the 50 year span between when Bilbo returns to the Shire and Frodo's adventures begin. But hey, all the better with the imaginative super powers of Guillermo del Toro I am sure that the second film will be great just please keep it under three hours this time, OK?
