At last year’s Sundance Film Festival (2007), one of my favorite films was “Son of Rambow.” The quick synopsis is, two young kids - in the early 1980’s - who don’t fit in, get together to make a movie. One of the kids is the school trouble maker, and one of the kids is from an extremely religious family that doesn’t allow him to watch TV or go to the movies.
Anyway, before the two kids get together, the school trouble maker brings a video camera into the local movie theater and videotapes Rambo. Soon after, the two kids become friends and the religious one watches Rambo and has an epiphany: he’s the Son of Rambo and decides to become the stunt man in their movie.
The rest of the film is the two of them trying to make their movie, but it’s so much more than that. The film tackles popularity, what being a young teenager was like in the 80’s, growing up, religion, family, even the creative process and how you need to compromise to make it all work. I haven’t seen a movie manage to tackle all of these issues and put it all together and make it work in a really long time.
"Son of Rambow" is sweet without being sappy. It’s a great, funny movie that all age groups are going to love. I cannot recommend the film enough.
So with the film finally arriving tomorrow, Paramount Vantage has supplied us with 6 movie clips and you can watch them below. Again, I cannot recommend the film enough. Try to check it out.
