Mark your calendars (if you are obsessive compulsive and lack a social life), the sequel to this weekend's big hit "Iron Man" is penciled in for an April 30, 2010 release date. So it seems that Robert Downey Jr.'s trainer wasn't totally full of shit.
At its earnings report meeting Monday morning, Marvel Entertainment announced its schedule for upcoming projects, including "Iron Man 2" and the big-screen "Thor" adaptation. The Viking God's hammer will join Tony Stark in 2010, with a June 4 release. Also given a slot is Marvel's long, long, long delayed Captain America film, now being called "The Avenger: Captain America" and set for May 6, 2011 – that is, of course, unless someone gets litigious, or the director drops out or the writers go back on strike…
Then in July 2011, The Avengers will assemble for the aptly titled "The Avengers." The project has been on Marvel's production schedule since 2006 and was given a nice set up in "Iron Man" when Nick Fury mentions the 'Avenger Initiative' to Tony Stark. So, "Iron Man" looks to be pretty busy for the next few years.
That only leaves 2009 empty of any big name Marvel action heroes at the box office. "Because Marvel believes that the summer is the optimal time to launch a new property, the company will not release a self produced film in 2009," the company said.
I can see that – although April 30 isn't what I call "summer" 'tis the season to make tons of money on superhero flicks, whatever you call it. And what will movie fans do for an entire year without Marvel?
DC, it's up to you – I know it's hard for you to not fuck up a golden opportunity but 2009 could be your year. Time to get serious about "Wonder Woman," at least - I know that Megan Gale is still sitting by her phone. Show us what you can do – and please have any DC Universe properties completed by this time next year, for your sake.
Wonder where they put that JLA footage here.
