After positive fan response to the teaser trailer for Frank Miller's "The Spirit" at the New York Comic Con, distributor Lionsgate has decided to move the film's release date from January 2009 to this Christmas day – and just so you know, the fact that JJ Abrams' "Star Trek" abandoned the date in favor of May 2009 had absolutely nothing to do with it.

Based on the comic by Will Eisner, "The Spirit" is the story of a murdered rookie policeman, Denny Colt, who returns from the dead to fight evil in Central City. Gabriel Macht (don't worry, I don't know who he is either) will star along with Eva Mendes as Sand Saref and Scarlett Johansson as 'sexy nurse' Silken Floss.

The trailer and images for "The Spirit" are incredible – all of that gritty Frank Miller darkness and Eva Mendes too! And so what if many young fans have never heard of "The Spirit." The fact that Frank Miller-directed films like "300" and "Sin City" have scored just as well with straight folks as they have with geeks bodes well for Lionsgate.

So "The Spirit" gets a coveted release during one of the most theatre-intensive weeks of the year – now all it has to do is beat "Marley and Me" to take the Christmas box office. I don't know - Owen Wilson plus cute dog, could be trouble.

Unwrap your dark, creepy Christmas presents here.
