DONNIE DARKO Gets an Unnecessary Sequel!

Back in 2001, Richard Kelly made a really great, original piece of cinema. Over time, it found its audience and grew into a bona fide cult hit. Kelly then announced his Director's Cut version and, after seeing it, audiences wondered if he had ever even understood his own film to begin with. Then, with the release of Southland Tales, they wondered if he ever even understood what a film was.

The news today, courtesy of Screen Daily, is that Darko is the latest title to be thrown atop the direct-to-DVD-sequel pile. This, we all know, is stupid. Really, really stupid. But since that's a given, I'm going to come out in the film's defense and say that the Darko-damage has already been done and that we might as well sit back enjoy the bizarre corporate name-branding that has provided bastardizations like American Psycho 2: All-American Girl and Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation.

The film will be titled S. Darko after the main character, Donnie's younger sister, Samantha (actress Daviegh Chase reprising her role). Seven years after the end of the first film, Samantha is 18 and headed on a road trip to Los Angeles with her best friend Corey when visions of giant rabbits strike. The cast also includes Ed Westwick, Briana Evigan and Justin Chatwin.

Chris Fisher -- of Nightstalker and Rampage: The Hillside Strangler Murders  direct-to-DVD fame -- will helm S. Darko and whose no-talentry is probably the most damning aspect of the project.

On the plus side, Richard Kelly has no involvement whatsoever.

A representative from Velvet Octopus, the production company responsible, tried to reassure fans by telling the world that, though Donnie himself doesn't appear, "...there are meteorites and rabbits."

Meteorites?
