SPEED who? IRON MAN kicks RACER ass.

For the second week in a row, Jon Favreau's "Iron Man" leads the weekend box-office totals – now nearing 200 million in just eleven days. This is especially embarrassing for Warner Brothers, whose much-hyped Wachowski vehicle "Speed Racer" chased terrible reviews into a second place finish in its debut week. Isn't the point of divvying up the weekends so that no studio has to compete with another's big budget title supposed to make these sorts of upsets avoidable? I guess that an inferior product like "Racer" had no chance up against the power of Robert Downey Jr. and "Iron Man" – massive promotional blitz or no.

Fox's romantic comedy "What Happens in Vegas" nearly matched the MUCH higher budgeted "Speed Racer," earning 20 million on its opening weekend. Ouch! Barely beating an Ashton Kutcher "comedy" is just more bad news for the Wachowski flick – on the plus side, my four year old cousins loved "Speed Racer." I taught them to say 'Mach Go! Go! Go!' And boy, do I wish I hadn't.

A little further down the top ten, comedies "Baby Mama" and "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" continue to perform well, with Judd Apatow's "Marshall" now topping 50 million after four weeks in theatres. David Mamet's "Redbelt" made a strong move into the top ten after distributor Sony Picture Classics added 1,373 locations to the film's initial six venue limited city debut. It's been pretty lean pickings for serious grownups lately – I'll bet that they rushed out to see "Redbelt" if only to avoid the humiliation of admitting they wanted to see "Iron Man" again. Damn elitists.
