Spielberg Aims for Honest Abe

Hey, -- remember back in February-- when we said that Spielberg had dropped out of "The Trial of the Chicago Seven"? It seemed that the director's departure was partially due to feeling that Aaron Sorkin's script needed more polish and because of the possibility of an Actors' strike. Well it turns out that "Chicago Seven" is going to have to wait at least two films to get made if Spielberg insists on directing it. Variety is reporting that after Spielberg finishes shooting the first part of "Tintin" early this fall, he will turn his attention to the Abraham Lincoln biopic based on Doris Kearns Goodwin's "Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln", (not, as Variety reports, "The Uniter: The Genius of Abraham Lincoln", a book that doesn't exist and would probably serve better as an ironic title for a George W. Bush biopic).
Not to get too tangential on this story, but I loved "Team of Rivals". Unfortunately, I'm already seeing problems. First, the script is being done by Tony Kushner. He doesn't impress me as a screenwriter. While his work on "Munich" is debatable (I don't care for the film but I know lots of people who think it's the goods), I found "Angels in America" a painful experience that found new and amazing ways to be heavy handed and soulless.
The other problem is the casting of Liam Neeson as Abraham Lincoln. Not to be too jingoistic about it, but can't we have an American play Lincoln? Is that too much to ask? Neeson's a fine actor and he bares a similar resemblance to the Railsplitter, but it just makes me a little sad that there won't be an American playing our country's greatest President.
