VEGAS cruises past SPEED RACER at the Box Office

The problem with printing studio box office estimates is that sometimes they are wrong – horribly, embarrassingly wrong. Such is the case with this past weekend's totals, which had the Wachowski Brother film "Speed Racer" placing second behind "Iron Man" and narrowly beating the Cameron Diaz/Ashton Kutcher comedy "What Happens in Vega" in third. How narrowly? Turns out, not so much.

Now that the weekend is over and the real money has been counted, Warner Brothers only made 18.6 million with their BIG budget "Speed Racer" adaptation; while the more modestly budgeted "Vegas" easily outpaced it with a 21.2 total take. Initial numbers reported by me and everyone else, had "Racer" earning 20.2 million and "Vegas" an even 20 million. I feel so dirty and wrong.

Seems that Warner's was a little over zealous in their early accounting and it's easy to understand why. Not beating "Iron Man" on their opening weekend is one thing, but coming in third behind an Ashton Kutcher movie is like, the worst. I mean they hyped the hell out of "Speed Racer" and the best it could pull was only slighter better than a wedding flick? Woe to the Wachowski Brothers, and woe to Warners. You both blew it – bad.

Good thing Rain has his music to fall back on here.
