When Guillermo del Toro did press interviews for "the Orphanage" back in December, he mentioned that he would most likely be involved with the adaptation of David Moody's 2006 novel "Haters." JoBlo reported way back then that del Toro was setting up the picture at Universal while ShockTillYouDrop had the news that the "Hobbit" man would serve as the project's producer only. Of course, Variety is only getting around to confirming this story today. Here is what "Haters" is all about:
Society sees a sudden increase in violent and random attacks on individuals. The perpetrators, called 'Haters' by the media, switch from rational humans to vicious killers within minutes. In this atmosphere, everyone is labeled either a 'Hater' or a victim. You can no longer trust anyone and at the end of the day you may be dead.
I don't know about you but that sounds awesome. Of course everything that Guillermo del Toro puts his hand to these days has that certain essence of awesome, right? No director has yet been chosen for "Haters," but del Toro told Daily Variety that he would "carry his weight on the creative side." If I were a movie studio that is exactly where I would choose to place del Toro's weight as well.
And not to fear, "The Hobbit" is taking priority for the man – just as it should be. "'The Hobbit' is a "monumental task, and I don't want to do anything that detracts from my attention to that." Neither do we, Guillermo, neither do we.
At this point I would usually include a link to the Variety story, to see why I haven't, read this – and the original stories I linked to above, of course.
