A few years back I was overjoyed to learn about the existence of "Bound For Glory", the 1976 biopic adaptation of Woody Guthrie's life directed by the immortal Hal Ashby with David Carradine as Guthrie himself. Then I was kind of depressed to learn that it just wasn't very good.
Still, my excitement has returned today's news (via Variety) of a new Guthrie-centric film to be called "Remember Their Names", based on the memoirs of Guthrie's friend and fellow soldier Jim Longhi. Longhi traveled with Woody and Cisco Houston, singing folksongs to their fellow soldiers all across Europe.
Mimi Leder ("Deep Impact", "Pay it Forward") is set to direct with a script from Longhi's brother, Reuben.
This has the potential to be something really special and I have high hopes of it getting right into development so we can hear all about what should be some pretty interesting casting. Especially if they get Marcus Carl Franklin to reprise his role from "I'm Not There".
