Indie director Austin Chick will write and direct a youth thriller for Screen Gems about a trio of early twenty-something’s who find a great deal of money in the Hamptons and most figure out how to divide up the money, elude their pursuers, and negotiate a love triangle that complicates things further.
Chick made his debut with the Mark Ruffalo romantic drama “XX/XY”, which has gained a cult following, and he also directed this years “August,” starring Josh Hartnett. Screen Gems is hoping that his experience can help bridge the gap between youth and young adult culture by making a mature thriller with thematic elements from “A Simple Plan,” but one that clearly taps into youth culture like “Cruel Intentions”.
This is good for Screen Gems, who earlier this year scored big with teens when they released “Prom Night”, which brought in $44 million. Though this film skews a bit higher demographically than “Prom Night”, the hope is that it hits the same kind of audience, while also drawing in viewers looking for highbrow fare.
