I like Mark Wahlberg. I also think Mila Kunis is starting to prove she belongs on the big screen. I’d like nothing more than “Max Payne” to be a great ride and a fantastic film.
But….that being said…I’m beyond nervous that the film is going to be a huge disappointment.
And the reason is…the 20th Century Fox logo.
Look, I’m not one to bash a studio or attack anyone personally, but I think we can all agree that something is clearly wrong at 20th Century Fox right now. I don’t know what’s going on, I don’t know who is making the decisions, but everything they’re putting out recently has been less than stellar.
And just to prove I’m not alone in thinking this way…please tell me the last 20th Century Fox film you thought was great. Tell me the last Fox movie you bought on DVD because you had to own it. Tell me the last time when you saw the logo…you thought you’re imagination would be pushed and you’d leave the theater inspired.
It’s been awhile…hasn’t it?
For a studio with tons of muscles and history, it pains me to watch them flounder again and again with titles that should be huge home-runs. Why couldn’t they open “The X-Files?” Could it be because the movie didn’t appeal to either the die-hard fans or the casual movie goers? Even their mid-range action films don’t work because they don’t know what they want to be. Either be violent and bloody and push the R…or…don’t walk in the arena.
The only film on their upcoming slate (this year) I actually think could be great is “Australia.” For some reason, I think Baz Luhrman’s upcoming epic has been given the freedom and budget to deliver something that will inspire. I don’t know why he’s the only filmmaker at Fox to get this creative freedom…but I wish more artists could work that way.

But…let’s get back to the reason for this article… “Max Payne.”
After watching the trailer, it def. looks like someone’s seen “Constantine.” And that’s a good thing. I really dug that film and if “Max Payne” can use some of the cool elements and mix it with a new story…it could be pretty cool.
Again, I’d love for “Max Payne” to deliver the goods. But, until 20th Century Fox delivers a movie that I think is great…I’ll not allow myself to think it will be. And for a film history buff and someone who grew up watching tons of classic movies made by Darryl F. Zanuck... I’d love for them to return to greatness.
Anyway, watch the trailer. Visually it looks pretty good. Here it is in HD.
