Variety tells us that we've got a Charles Darwin biopic coming that focuses on the marriage between Charles and Emma Wedgwood (future Emma Darwin) who -- in real life -- was Charles' cousin. Eww.
Anyway, Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly will be taking the respective husband and wife roles and putting them on the screen as Mr. and Mrs. Darwin. As far as we know, Bettany and Connelly are not real-life cousins but if you feel inclined to start that rumor, I've got your back.
The film, "Creation, is drafted by John Collee (There's no "Y" at the end, silly Variety), the man who brought us "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World", "Happy Feet" and the upcoming Zack Snyder kids movie, "Guardians of Ga'Hoole". The script is said to be based directly on "Annie's Box" by Randal Keynes, great-great grandson to Darwin.
Annie refers to Darwin's daughter who died when she was ten, leading Darwin to be tortured by the revelation that inbreeding may ultimately have been the reason for her death. Presumably, the script balances Darwin's science against Emma's faith. Interestingly, Variety's description lists the work as "part ghost story" and, all cynicism aside, the story is a pretty interesting one.
With cynicism back on, I'll add that the film is being rushed for a release next year to coincide with Darwin's 200th birthday. Oh, the parties we'll be throwing then.
