Robert DeNiro has abruptly exited Martin Campbell's upcoming film, "Edge of Darkness". DeNiro was to play "an operative sent to clean up the evidence in the murder of a young woman" with Mel Gibson as the young woman's father. DeNiro had just arrived on set this week and now the production will be forced to shoot around his scenes until they can find a replacement. As for the reason for DeNiro's departure, his spokesman gave one of the all-time great patronizing PR quotes: "Sometimes things don't work out; it's called creative differences," It's that what it's called? Oooh, tell me more!
The film is based on a 1985 BBC miniseries that Campbell directed. For those just tuning in, here's a brief synopsis:
Gibson stars as Thomas Craven, a straitlaced homicide detective for the Boston Police Dept. and single father, whose 24-year old daughter is murdered on the steps of his home. The cop assumes he was the target, but his investigation leads in another direction and uncovers his daughter's secret life, a corporate cover-up and government collusion.
