20th Century Fox Meets To Get Back on Their Feet

Just like Warner Bros earlier this summer, Fox is having a strategic meeting to solve a problem. And just like Warner Bros., it looks like they're coming back with the wrong answer.
Fox had an inarguably abysmal summer, one with no tentpoles or any critical acclaim. It's not just a matter of not having a superhero flick in the mix; it's not having a single worthwhile franchise in the mix. We can squabble over the quality of "The X-Files: I Want to Believe", but you don't put a movie of a TV show that's been off the air since 2002 into the arena with summer blockbusters. If your biggest hit is "What Happens in Vegas", you done fucked up.
But the problem isn't about properties. The problem is quality. The last great film Fox put out was 2006's "Borat!" So when Fox talks about relaunching "Daredevil" or doing a "Deadpool" spinoff (of the upcoming "Wolverine" spinoff), that stuff only works on an opening weekend. I have no doubt that "Wolverine" will have a great opening weekend but with all the rumors swirling about a troubled production and fights between director Gavin Hood and Fox, I seriously doubt the film will have legs.
So if Fox wants to relaunch "Daredevil", that's fine. It's a property that could use a fresh start. But instead of looking for the brands with the biggest name recognition, Fox would do well to use common sense and realize that they can go beyond a big opening weekend if they just start hiring for talent and passion for the project rather than what comic nerds will buy on a weekly basis regardless of quality.
