Who Will Helm del Toro's HATER?

As if Guillermo del Toro wasn't busy enough between his multi-picture Universal schedule and some little project called "The Hobbit," the man is also going forward with his producer-only role on the film "Haters." The film (also set up at Universal) is based on David Moody's 2006 novel about random societal violence. Back in May del Toro was still looking for a director for the film – turns out the perfect candidate was right under his nose.
According to Variety, del Toro has selected Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona to helm "Haters." If Bayona's name sounds familiar that's because he was the man who directed del Toro's last "producer-only" gig on the psychological thriller "The Orphanage." Bayona will make his English language debut with "Haters," a film that chronicles a phenomenon which turns rational people into vicious killers at the drop of a hat… I believe we call it "Grand Theft Auto" in this country.
Producer Mark Johnson originally approached Guillermo to direct "Haters" -- but what with his, like, 200 other projects currently in play, the man just couldn't find the time for Hatin'. Production will begin sometime next year in Spain with a 2010 release anticipated.
