The Hollywood Reporter has the news that another Chuck Palahniuk classic is headed to the big screen. The brand-spanking new production company New School Media has optioned the author's 2005 novel "Haunted" for feature development. Palahniuk, you may recall, is the author of a little flick called "Fight Club." He also wrote the novel upon which the more recent film "Choke" was based – an inconvenient fact that will probably be omitted when New School ramps up their "Haunted" ad campaign.
Seriously though, "Choke" has not been performing very well. Yes, it has only been in limited release and Fox Searchlight pretty much pulled the advertising plug after the film's opening weekend - but a movie about a funny pervert with a "Fight Club" pedigree that can not even break three million inside of a month is the very definition of dud.
But let's forget about "Choke" for a moment (you know Fox wishes they could) and talk about "Haunted." The novel is about a group of writers who are lured to an artist's retreat. Once there, the retreat 'host' forces the assembled scribes to compete in a series of dangerous and demeaning competitions while withholding food and heat (their host's name may or may not be Jeff Probst). The writers must also chronicle their plight in prose – "Misery" style.
Brian Levy, the ex-literary agent who founded New School Media, will be producing with Belgium's Koen Mortier (don't worry, I've never heard of him either) directing and adapting the text.
I am not including a link to The Hollywood Reporter article and here's why
