News has been flaring up and then quickly disappearing about DreamWorks' "The Trial of the Chicago 7" ever since the release of the last film about the 1968 Chicago riots (Brett Morgen's "Chicago 10") less than a year ago. Since then, we've heard the Steven Spielberg is directing, Paul Greengrass is directing and now (via the Hollywood Reporter) that the new director may be Ben Stiller? Really?
One kind of wonders if Ben Stiller in the role would also have him playing Abbie Hoffman, one of the founders of the Yippie movement and the lead in the film. He's about 15 years older than Hoffman was at the time, but I could definitely see it. At least more than I can see him in the director's chair.
With a script by Aaron Sorkin, the Hollywood Reporter says that Dreamworks is trying to get the project moving as soon as possible, though one questions the rush when viable candidates seem to pass right through the project.
In Stiller's defense, I think it's great that the guy is trying something different. But it's still going to be strange if we wind up seeing "From the Director 'Zoolander'" on the "Chicago 7" poster.
