It’s way past midnight. All the journalists on the set visit have been drinking. Our call time is 7:30am. I have almost no idea how to play poker but we’re all playing in a private tournament. I decide to go “all in”. I win.
Let me back up a bit.
Last year I went to Las Vegas for about 24 hours. I got to go with some other online journalists to visit the set of Todd Phillips' (“Old School”, “Road Trip”) upcoming summer comedy “The Hangover”.
The film is about a group of friends - Bradley Cooper, Justin Bartha, Zach Galifianakis and Ed Helms – who go to Caesars Palace in Las Vegas for Justin’s bachelor party and everything goes wrong. It ends up the group loses the groom just before his wedding and the trio has to retrace all their bad decisions from the night before to figure out where things went wrong. And it isn’t a PG-13 adventure….it’s rated R.
While some set visits have an abundance of time, this one was lighting fast. We actually left Burbank at 5pm and arrived back the next day at 8pm.
What was cool about this trip was everything took place at Caesars Palace on the Las Vegas strip. So when we arrived at the hotel, we not only got a fantastic meal at Rao (a great restaurant inside Caesar’s), we went right to a journalists-only Poker tournament. And since we were all staying at the hotel and didn’t have to drive anywhere…let’s just say most of us enjoyed a tasty beverage or four…. That’s also where I got to finally say the words “all in”.
Anyway, while the night was a tremendous amount of fun and the hotel was great, we all had to be on set at 7:30am….which was a few hours after the poker tournament ended. While I can’t prove it, I think everyone at Warner Bros. wanted us to have a hangover on the set of “The Hangover”.
And if that was their plan, it worked perfectly.

So while we all battled headaches and being a bit dehydrated, we got to see a few scenes get filmed and conduct interviews with almost everyone in the movie.
If you’ve seen the amazing trailer (which is below), you saw part of what we watched.
Imagine if part of your movie takes place at the only valet station of an extremely busy hotel. Now, envision trying to film at said valet station as hundreds of hotel guests try to arrive and leave. While you get a lot of extra people in the background, it doesn’t make for easy filming. Especially if you have a long take from the front doors to the other end of the parking lot.
Anyway, while we only got to see a few scenes get filmed, we saw all the actors interact and it looked like they were having way too much fun. In fact, we got to see Zach Galifianakis deliver a few unscripted lines that had all of us laughing so hard I think we ruined a take or two.
Since I don’t want to ruin what he said, let me just say there is no way this movie won’t be funny.

After watching some filming we walked inside the hotel and conducted interviews with the cast and director Todd Phillips. Everyone we spoke with couldn’t have been nicer, and I definitely walked away thinking this could be a great comedy.
And I think I was right. I’ve spoken to a few people that have seen the final product and all of them say it’s great and really funny. Warner Bros. must agree as they have already hired screenwriters to write a sequel. This is before the movie has been released. They clearly think they have something special and don’t want to make the “Old School” mistake and wait too long to do a sequel.
“The Hangover” opens on June 5th. And if you need more of a reason to get excited for this movie, watch this trailer. Tell me you're not excited for this film after watching it.
