One of the worst kept secrets in television was made official on Monday when NBC executives confirmed that former "Saturday Night Live" star Jimmy Fallon will take Conan O'Brian's "Late Night" desk in 2009. Sure, the news has been out there since late April, but that's why it's a badly kept secret – get it? The announcement was made at an NBC press conference held at the network's headquarters in New York – you can call it 30 Rock – with Fallon and his svengali Lorne Michaels in attendance.
Fallon will assume his hosting duties sometime after Conan moves to his new gig hosting "The Tonight Show" in 2009. Neither Fallon nor Michaels would confirm a specific date, but the comedian did say that his "Late Night" would remain in New York and would air five nights a week. Michaels will come on as the show's producer, with other casting decisions to be announced later.
"It's a comedians dream to get his job, to work with writers and try to be funny every night," said Fallon about snagging the Conan gig. Of course "try to be funny" is the key phrase in that sentence. Jimmy Fallon has been sort of short on the funny since leaving "SNL" in 2004. You don't believe me? Maybe you're forgetting "Taxi" or how about his voice role in "Doogal?"
Even if film stardom has eluded him, Fallon has retained a lot of fans and good will from his work on "Saturday Night Live." Cast members like Tracy Morgan may not have appreciated how often Fallon broke character during his sketches, but the audience ate it up. Maybe a talk show is the perfect venue for his talent to really shine. On the other hand, trying to fill an hour every night isn't easy – there's only so many times he can trot out Jarret's Room and Barry Gibb before he'll have to bring the fresh funny – here's hoping he keeps some of Conan's writers around.
Host your own car wash for peace here.
