IRON MAN 2 Trailer 2 Plus 15 New High Resolution Images from The Film

Like Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) says, “It’s good to be back.”  When Iron Man was released in May 2008, it was the anti-Dark Knight.  Irreverent and action-packed, Iron Man stripped away the Nietzsche and gave audiences a fun superhero film in a glossy red and gold finish.  In the two years since, anticipation for the sequel has grown and will likely reach a fever pitch by the time Iron Man 2 hits theaters May 7th.  Adding fuel to the fire is the first full-length trailer for the film, embedded after the jump.  Expanding on the first teaser trailer, this one fleshes out the plot and gives more screen time to Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Whiplash (Mickey Rourke), War Machine (Don Cheadle) and Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell).  While the trailer features Stark’s trademark quips, the best line belongs to Whiplash.  He posits, “If you could make God bleed, people would cease to believe in him.”  Find out Iron Man’s response after the jump and see 15 new high resolution images taken from the trailer:

First Image from BETTY ANNE WATERS Starring Hilary Swank, Sam Rockwell, Melissa Leo, Minnie Driver, Juliette Lewis and Peter Gallagher

The first image from Fox Searchlight’s Betty Anne Waters has been released and it features Sam Rockwell and Hilary Swank.  Currently set to open in this fall, the film is about a single working mother that spends nearly two decades putting herself through law school and tirelessly trying to overturn her brother’s unjust murder conviction.

Directed by Tony Goldwyn (The Last Kiss), the film also stars Melissa Leo, Minnie Driver, Juliette Lewis and Peter Gallagher.  Hit the jump for the full synopsis and image.

Hilary Swank’s BETTY ANNE WATERS Gets Picked up by Fox Searchlight

slice_hilary_swank_01.jpg

Hilary Swank is in a new movie.  And now it has a distributor in Fox Searchlight.  Betty Anne Waters stars the two-time Oscar winner along with a strong ensemble including the always awesome Sam Rockwell and Juliette Lewis.  Waters is the true story of a woman that spends ten years trying to prove the innocence of her brother, who incidentally was convicted of murder.  In the process of being the best sister ever, she gets a law degree and *spoiler alert* gets her brother off the hook.

Fox Searchlight has six total Oscar nods this year.  With Betty Anne Waters being an indie biopic about a strong-willed woman fighting for a just cause that stars Hilary Swank, I think it may actually win all of next year’s Oscars.  Then again, that was the thinking about Amelia and that didn’t really pan out, so it could go either way. Sony Pictures Classics Gives Lame Reason for Why They Aren’t Pushing MOON for Oscars

Posted: January 5th, 2010 at 3:12 pm

slice_moon_sam_rockwell_oscar_statue_01.jpg

[CORRECTION: Much like Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group, I fucked up.  Sony Pictures Classics had nothing to do with Moon's non-existent awards-campaign.  It is the fault of SPWAG and this article has been updated where appropriate.  My deepest apologies to Sony Pictures Classics] One of the best science fiction films in years, Duncan Jones’ Moon has been largely absent from this year’s awards race.  A large reason for that is because Sony Pictures Classics, the studio behind the film, has failed to give the film any promotion, especially where screeners are concerned.  According to Movieline, the reason they’re not sending screeners out to voters is fear of piracy.  Already a poor excuse since other studios take the risk to get their films into Oscar contention, SPWAG’s reason is nonsense since the film is already on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK where it has been available since November 16th.  I don’t mean to cast aspersions on the British people, but I’m pretty sure they have the technology to pirate movies.

Hit the jump for more outrage from me and from Jones.

The joy of list-making continues today as I’m running down who I thought gave the best performances of the year plus what I thought were the best quotes and kills of 2009.  Please keep in mind that regarding the performances, I haven’t seen a few key films that could have very well changed the winners and runners-up: Crazy Heart (Best Actor), The Last Station and Bright Star (Best Actress), and a few others.  If you think there was someone who clearly should’ve won or been nominated, shout out in the comments section and I’ll let you know whether I saw the film or not.

With this disclaimer out of the way, I present to you my picks for the best performers, directors, quotes, and kills of 2009.  Hit the jump to check them all out.

G-FORCE Blu-ray Review

G Force movie image.jpg

Whatever can be said of Jerry Bruckheimer, and at this point the white hot hate for his style of Bruckheimer/Simpson movies has to have subsided some (he’s no longer making Top Gun-Style borderline propaganda now that Michael Bay’s moved on), there is no doubt of one thing: dude has an eye for talent. Look at G-Force, and the cast: Tracy Morgan, Zach Galifianakis, Sam Rockwell, Steve Buscemi, Nicholas Cage, Will Arnett, Penelope Cruz, and Bill Nighy. That’s a cast you’d want in most anything. My review of G-Force after the jump.

3 New Images from IRON MAN 2

Paramount has released two new images and a set photo from Jon Favreau’s Iron Man 2 and while none of them will blow your mind, we need our minds whole until December 25th (where it will be attached to Sherlock Holmes) so they can be blown apart by the first trailer for the movie.  Still, it’s good that Gwyneth Paltrow and Sam Rockwell (who plays rival arms dealer Justin Hammer) haven’t been lost in the shuffle of the film’s publicity.  As for the set photo, it’s from the scene of Stark being called in for a congressional hearing and grilled about why the suit isn’t the property of the U.S. government.

Hit the jump to check out all the images.  Iron Man 2 hits theaters on May 7, 2010.

Duncan Jones’ MOON Wins Best Picture and Best Debut Director at the British Independent Film Awards

Posted: December 6th, 2009 at 9:43 pm

slice_moon_poster_01.jpg

One of the best sci-fi films of the past several years, Duncan Jones’ Moon took home both Best Picture and Best Debut Director at this year’s British Independent Film Awards.  The was also received nominations for Sam Rockwell for Best Actor, Duncan for Best Director (a category which included both debut and veteran directors), Nathan Parker for Best Screenplay, and two nominations in the Best Technical Achievement category with Clint Mansell getting a nod for Original Score and Tony Noble for Production Design.

Any victory for Moon is an important victory because while it received large critical acclaim, its June release may have left it slightly adrift in the minds of critics and societies compiling their Top 10 of 2009 lists.  I’ll admit that it is disappointing that Rockwell didn’t win, but he did lose to Tom Hardy’s universally loved performance in Bronson so it wasn’t like the BIFA made a grievous error.  What’s important for Moon is to just make sure people don’t forget about it.

Other big films at BIFA were Fish Tank (7 nominations, 2 wins), Nowhere Boy (6 nominations, 1 win), An Education (6 nominations, 1 win), and In the Loop (5 nominations, 1 win) Hit the jump for the full list of nominees and winners.

International IRON MAN 2 Poster

Iron Man 2 movie poster international (1).jpg

Paramount and Marvel have released a new international Iron Man 2 movie poster.  While the first poster featured Iron Man and War Machine, the new one reminds people Robert Downey Jr. is the star of the show.

Even though I am not crazy about the background of the poster, anytime I see the Iron Man armor and Downey Jr. in costume I get excited.  This is one of those films that cannot arrive soon enough, and it’s one of those rare movies that’s guaranteed to make huge money when it gets released.  Check out the poster after the jump:

GALAXY QUEST Blu-ray Review

galaxy_quest_movie_image (4).jpg

When you talk about the year of cinema that was 1999, there are the films that come immediately. Fight Club, The Sixth Sense, The Matrix, Eyes Wide Shut. I love The Insider, have a soft spot for eXistenZ and Three Kings and then it starts getting complicated, as films like American Beauty, Girls Don’t Cry, and The Green Mile haven’t exactly weathered as well, while films like Office Space have only grown in estimation.  At the time, most wouldn’t have listed Galaxy Quest as one of the great films of 1999, and yet ten years later, someone like David Mamet can call it a perfect movie. And it is. By Grabthar’s Hammer, my review of Galaxy Quest after the jump.

We missed some stories this past week.  We’re sorry.  But we did not forget them.  We never forget.  We’re like elephants and people who hold grudges.  With that in mind, here are some stories that are a little late but they’re still great.  You can enjoy them all after the jump.

Jared & Jerusha Hess Interview GENTLEMEN BRONCOS

Writing and producing partners Jared and Jerusha Hess, who are also husband and wife, have made a career out of championing the underdog. With their quirky sense of humor and their inspiration from the unlikeliest of places, the duo’s success with “Napoleon Dynamite” and “Nacho Libre” have carved them a niche in Hollywood that they are quite happy with.

At the press day for “Gentlemen Broncos”, the Hesses talked about working with special effects for the first time and assembling the cast for this film about an outsider with big dreams trying to achieve what he wants to do in life. Continued after the jump:

For Your Consideration - Sam Rockwell for Best Actor in MOON

Posted: October 22nd, 2009 at 8:18 pm

slice_moon_sam_rockwell_oscar_statue_01.jpg

The Academy can–and often does–neglect obvious choices in the major Oscar categories.  Studios throw their weight behind certain films and actors and it usually turns out that the biggest marketing budget wins.  Then there’s the obstacle of how the Academy turns away from performances in genre films in favor of hot actresses going ugly or actors doing a perfect impression of a recently deceased legend.  Throw all this together and it looks like the people are going to have to rally if Sam Rockwell is going to get the Oscar nomination he deserves for his performance in Duncan Jones’ “Moon”.  Hit the jump to find out how you can support a worthy cause.

2 Movie Clips from Director Jared Hess’ GENTLEMEN BRONCOS

slice_gentleman_broncos_logo_01.jpg

Opening on October 30th is director Jared Hess’ (”Napoleon Dynamite”) new movie “Gentlemen Broncos”. While the reviews out of Fantastic Fest were not pretty, this is one of those movies I still want to see due to the cast. After all, who isn’t a fan of Sam Rockwell and Jemaine Clement. Anyway, Fox Searchlight has released two clips from the movie and you can watch them after the jump. I’ve also posted the synopsis if you’re not familiar with the film.

Duncan Jones’ MOON Lands at Sitges and Nabs 3 Awards Before Heading Back to the Stars. Plus Other Winners

Did you happen to see Duncan Jones’ quiet little sci-fi picture “Moon” when it played in limited release over the summer?  Did you love it? Did you hope it won some awards when you walked out (little gold men even)?  Well, it still might.  However, it did receive handsome kudos from the Sitges Film Festival taking home the prizes for film, best actor for Sam Rockwell, and the screenplay award for Nathan Parker.   More of the “Moon” accomplishments after the jump, one of which is the conclusive evidence that there is no cheese on its surface.
