MONSTERS, INC. Blu-ray Review

Monsters Inc. movie image Pixar new (3).jpg

I opined when it came to Up that it’s hard to judge the Pixar canon because there are so few missteps, but when it comes to favorites, everyone’s got to have one. You have to at some point think of which one you love the most. It’s not like they’re your children. Though a case can be made for almost every single one of their films, the one that gets me the hardest, and the one that always works me over like a sap is Monsters Inc. My review of it after the jump.

Michael Stuhlbarg talks about Martin Scorsese’s HBO Show BOARDWALK EMPIRE

HBO makes great television. We all know that. Every year the cable channel produces series and mini-series that go on to win Emmys and create intense conversations about the latest episodes. And right now, the network is hard at work producing what’s sure to be a massive television event, “Boardwalk Empire”.

If you haven’t yet heard of the show, don’t panic. The network only shot the pilot a few months ago and the full series begins shooting next month. But the reason you should care is one name: Martin Scorsese. Yes, one of the greatest directors in Hollywood directed the pilot and he’s producing the show along with a few people that made “The Sopranos”. The show is a look at the origins of Atlantic City’s boardwalk and is based on the book “Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City” by Nelson Johnson. I recently got to speak to one of the stars of the show, Michael Stuhlbarg, and after the jump you can read what he had to say:

I’ll admit I didn’t know the first thing about writer-director Hue Rhodes “Saint John of Las Vegas” until today, but when you’ve got a cast that includes Steve Buscemi, Sarah Silverman, Romany Malco, Peter Dinklage, Tim Blake Nelson, John Cho and Emmanuelle Chirqui, I take notice. So when I was sent 12 images and the poster for the film which arrives in February of next year, I figured they were worth sharing. So take a look after the jump:

YOUTH IN REVOLT Moved to January 15, 2010

The Weinstein Company has just announced they’re moving “Youth in Revolt” to January 15, 2010 from their previously announced October release date. While moving a release is sometimes the sign of a troubled film or production, I saw a screening a few days ago at the Toronto Film Festival and have to say…it’s a great movie. The film is based on acclaimed novel by C.D. Payne and it’s the story of Nick Twisp -  a teen with a taste for the finer things in life like Sinatra and Fellini - and he’s played by Michael Cera. Actually, I posted a video blog about the movie yesterday where I sang the films praises. For more on the film and why it probably moved, hit the jump:

HBO Walks Martin Scorsese’s BOARDWALK EMPIRE With Steve Buscemi

HBO has picked up the Scorsese-produced “Boardwalk Empire” for 11 episodes.  The series will be set in 1920 at the dawn of prohibition and chronicles the life and times of Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi), the undisputed ruler of Atlantic City, who was equal parts politician and gangster. If this news doesn’t make you say “fuck yes!”, especially after reading that little plot synopsis, then you really, really suck. You can get the full details after the jump.

Once again, with the Toronto Film Festival set to begin in a few weeks, I’ve been provided with a ton of new images from the many films that are premiering at the festival. So rather than waste any time, after the jump take a look at new images “Jennifer’s Body”, “The Road” and “Youth in Revolt”. All three look like they could be really good.

Go a Little Crazy for Love with the Trailer for YOUTH IN REVOLT Starring Michael Cera

I’m not sure what to make of this one. It’s obvious that Michael Cera needs to branch out if he’s going to keep a steady career going, and he’s certainly doing that with “Youth in Revolt.” Cera plays a 16-year-old who desperately wants his “dream girl,” Sheeni Saunders (Portia Doubleday), to notice him. As any sane person would do, he creates a bad-ass alter-ego for himself who can get the job done and secure the girl. Check out the trailer after the jump.

PREDATOR 2, FARGO and THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY Blu-ray Reviews

The Good, the Bad and The Ugly Blu-ray (1).jpg

On one hand it’s great Fox has been releasing their catalog titles in 1080p and in DTS looking great. On the other hand, they haven’t put in that much work to jazz it up for audiences buying it a second time. None of the films here have anything new, but all look appreciably better in their Blu-ray iterations. After the jump are my reviews of “Predator 2″, “Fargo” and “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” on Blu-ray.
