Roman Polanski’s GHOST Now in Limbo

As we reported earlier, Roman Polanski was arrested this past weekend in Switzerland, 31 years after pleading guilty to having sexual relations with an underage girl and subsequently leaving the United States. His arrest means that his latest film, “The Ghost” has been left unfinished. Starring Pierce Brosnan and Ewan McGregor, the movie centers on the fictional former British politician Adam Lang (Brosnan) as he writes his memoirs with the help of McGregor’s character. Based on the Robert Harris novel, “The Ghost” also stars Kim Cattrall, Tom Wilkinson, Olivia Williams and James Belushi. Hit the jump to find out more about the film and whether or not it can make it into theaters.

DUPLICITY Blu-ray Review

Clive Owen is one of those actors who hasn’t found his audience yet, but has a devoted following of men and women who get him. It’s easy to see why he’s got something of a cult following: The man gives off the air of casual cool, and has what magazines refer to as “a rugged sex appeal” in a way that few modern actors possess. He looks like he could have been a day laborer at one point or another, probably did some boxing, but knows how to wrap his way around words. He’s got those penetrating eyes that suggest the sort of world-weariness that was of fashion in the 30’s and 40’s. And yet when a film of his clicks with an audience (Inside Man, Sin City), it’s usually because he’s an ensemble player. Duplicity did not find its audience, and Clive Owen still waits for the role that connects him with audiences. My Review of Duplicity after the jump.

Filming Commences on THE GREEN HORNET

While many thought “The Green Hornet” would never get made due to all the problems finding a director and Kato, thanks to a press release from Columbia Pictures, we know filming has actually begun!

I know some of you aren’t excited to see “Green Hornet” and to those…I’m sorry. Because any film directed by Michel Gondry is worth seeing and this is going to be the biggest budget he’s ever had. Come on…aren’t you a little bit curious? Anyway, I’ve posted the press release after the jump so take a look:

HBO’s JOHN ADAMS Blu-ray Review

John Adams HBO image Paul Giamatti.jpg

You have to give it up for HBO. The mini-series as a format is on its death-nell. Network television has no interest in the format any more, or hasn’t for a while. They’d rather have a regular series, or a reality show. But the expense of putting on these sorts of things are of an older school, a school that is now all but vanished. But when HBO wants to do something (with the encouragement of Tom Hanks for sure), it gets done, and so the story of John Adams has been made as a seven part mini-series. Harrumph.

My review is after the jump:

VALKYRIE Blu-ray Review

Posted: June 15th, 2009 at 10:53 am

valkyrie_movie_image_tom_cruise_.jpgTom Cruise spent twenty years on top. Or almost. From 1986’s Top Gun through to 2005’s Mission: Impossible III, the man was one of the world’s most bankable stars. Then he married Katie Holmes, and it ruined him. That or the couch jumping. Or the scientology. Or the seriousness. Or the fact that he was on top for so long, but came across as awkward and self-serious, and all those bad movies like MI:2 caught up with him, or something.

Maybe he pissed off Steven Spielberg - who was supposedly not amused that TC hurt the War of the Worlds box office with his schtick - but he left Paramount, which had been his home since Top Gun (he worked elsewhere, but they were his base). Ben Stiller helped him by giving Cruise a show-stopping cameo in Tropic Thunder. And though Valkyrie was looking to be a disaster when it moved from an October to February release date. But MGM did a smart thing and put it out in Oscar season. Sure, the film was never meant to be a contender, but it had the pedigree. And so the film did a little over $80 domestic, and a bit more than that internationally. Strange that this might be considered a comeback. But the film attempted to marginalize its star, and surround him with talents.

Tom Wilkinson and Camille Belle Hang Out AFTER THE WEDDING

Posted: May 18th, 2009 at 9:19 pm

tom_wilkinson_camille_belle_01.jpgTom Wilkinson and Camille Belle have signed to Michael Caton-Jones’ remake of Danish helmer Susanna Bier’s “After the Wedding.”  This is a unique pairing because Wilkinson is one of the strongest actors working today and Camille Belle can get upstaged by literally anything that is up stage of her.  I’ve seen muslin with more presence.

Hopefully she’ll be able to step up from some heavy drama.  Variety describes the plot as an expatriate social worker who runs a Mumbai orphanage on a tight budget and receives a mysterious multimillion-dollar donation from a Western businessman.  Um…thrilling?  I mean, are we really at that point where a businessman making a charitable donation just turns the world on its head?

Caton-Jones’ explains, “It’s a simple yet terrifically emotional story that asks us deep questions about our lives, families and responsibilities.”  He’ll certainly get the terrific and emotion from Wilkinson.  Everything else…I’m not so sure.
